wake from sleep/screen lock: SDDM takes a long time for login

When my laptop wakes from sleep or when I try to get back in after screen lock, it often takes a very long time for SDDM to show the login box.
Minutes, sometimes not at all, can pass before it will let me log in.

Any idea where to look to find out why and how to fix it?
