Is it me or all the global themes do not works on this release

I gave 24.10 a try on an older PC and one thing I noticed, is that none of the downloadable global themes (plasma 6) seems to work on this release. Confirm also on a Virtualbox machine too. Amusing, they all work fine in Manjaro KDE plasma 6.

A crap ton of Global Themes marked as "Plasma 6" by their creator or assembler don't work for me anywhere.
    1. Sometimes it is the very flaky Pling website being janky
    2. Sometimes is that one of the individual components that the Global Theme wants to install has moved, or no longer exists.
    3. Sometimes the person who put together the list of theme components is just lying.
    4. They almost never provide actual instruction for how they achieved that specific look and layout, which may need some manual adjustments.
There is no formal way of vetting things there other than user reviews, and you are at the mercy of whomever assembled the list (that's all a global theme is, mostly), and often they never update or fix any issues some may have. Or forget to mention some part that is needed (kvantum for example).

Yes, you are mostly right. That's why I am going to stay with the LTS versions. 24.10 is just for testing only.

Heck a ton of stuff doesn't work in Plasma 5.27, fwiw

I use a number of plasma 5 Styles in plasma 6 just fine, as well. Mostly it's SDDM themes that need to be updated by their creators to work in Plasma 6.

I don't do full Plasma Theme as most people have sucky ideas and style sense So I start with a Plasma Style and go from there.

Well after all this time, Ubuntu still hasn't fix that problem. All the themes updated to plasma 6 which works fine in plasma 5 in 24.04 don't works in Kubuntu 24.10. They works fine in Plasma 6 Manjaro Kde, Kaos but not in the latest Kubuntu. You may argue that themes are not important but sorry they elevate the Kde looks to fantastic level which rival Windows 11. That's very strange that they don't fix this. Anyway I use Manjaro Kde instead.

I'm not sure laying responsibility at the feet of Canonical (Ubuntu's owner) is valid. Themes, other than the one the release came with, AFAIK aren't developed by Canonical. Rather, individuals do that with their own time and effort. There might be a few exceptions, but not many I suspect. For example, Breeze theme works perfectly but is maintained (again, AFAIK) by the KDE developers.

I think the best course of action for users (vs. developers) is to comment or report failings on the various websites hosting the themes and then give the developer of the theme a chance to retort or update the theme. Or possibly, dig into the theme itself and figure out how to fix it yourself.

So maybe it's a bug in plasma 6.1.5 as the others like Manjaro that are rolling or update more often than 6 months are on plasma 6.2.3 or .4 (Arch-based, Fedora, KDE neon etc)

I was seeing some to most (but not all) global themes having issues on 6.1.x, but none since 6.2. I also saw more Plasma 6 global themes, so my initial thought was that these third party folks fixed their s**t. Maybe the fixes work in 6.2.x, and not 6.1, or there is some sort of Qt incompatibility or related thing.
(Most stable or slow release distros won't change a major library set like this between releases)

I haven't spied a bug report after a brief search so maybe it doesn't hit everyone still on Plasma 6.1 ( basically Kubuntu and certain Debian tracks)

ok there is https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=494354 but not many comments

On 24.10 and Plasma 6.1, for each one I have tried (6 or 7 random and recent ones) the global theme install barfs an error about the color scheme, for testing (6.1.5 is sooo last month )

There is no relevant error output in the terminal for this.

True, the op on that linked thread (plasma 5) was having trouble even accessing the global themes, let along installing them.

It's also true that many themes designed for plasma 5 don't work properly or at all on plasma 6 without some effort by the author.... breeze works tho

All the themes I tried were recent, specified to be for Plasma 6 (fwiw), and install just fine in Plasma 6.2.3 with zero issue.

In 6.1, they all fail with the popup error installing or downloading the color scheme. Which does install just fine when done separately via the Get New tool for colors

I saw this early on in plasma 6.0 and 6.1. I assumed it was from both the theme packaging or the usual jankiness of the Store.

I don't usually use full global themes myself so I set things up and moved on.

So I assume it's a KDE bug, fixed in 6.2.x, with no fix for 6.1 unless whatever broke can be patched via a backport from the newer code.

Interesting, yes all the themes modules (colour, plasma, decorations) install correctly individually. It's seem only the "global theming" function that doesn't work. Kubuntu 24.10 is still on Plasma 6.1.5. Manjaro, on 6.2.4. I don't recall they where not working in Manjaro 6.1 (?) but they works fine on 6.2.4. I hope it get fix with Kubuntu Plasma 6.2.x

Just, a note I cannot find the kvantum manager in the software repository in Kubuntu. Kvantum extension give a gorgeous blur and transparency effect on windows. Tx

P.S this was what can be achieve with theming easily in Kde.

Kvantum is very much third-party stuff

                            But it is easily installed

Ok thanks. I install it and it works fine. That's the first time though that I can't find it in a distro, not even in the "store".

I think 24.10 is transitory and the fist 25.04 (?) is in beta already. Hopefully, everything will be smoother.

                              Cheer.
