Trying to find correct nvidia driver

I'm using an older video card (see below)/ Tried installing nvidia-340 but it just broke the install. Anybody have a better idea?

VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G98 [GeForce 8400 GS Rev. 2]

The Driver Manager will take care of that. Without looking, It probably is that your card is only supported on the Nouveau driver

What do you mean by break, exactly? (could be something fixable)
How did you install this driver?

Actually, the 340 driver is no longer supported on recent kernels (not just Ubuntu), though there may be third party sources with modified builds that can be tried, though there are very mixed reports on it working. Much of what I see is about the previous 6.8 kernel and earlier, so if you use 6.11 ( the current defualt 24.04 kernel) this may or may not work.

In many cases, the current nouveau available in the most current kernel can actually be as good as if not better than the old 340 proprietary driver from 6 years ago. YMMV of course. truly old cards like this seem to fare better on nouveau, though every one is different.
