When I try, it tells me that it has the "wrong magic number." I have no idea what that means. On 22.04 it installed and ran with no problem. I've tried to find a new download online, but Broadcom's (purchaser of VMware) website is unnavigable.

As far as I can tell VMware WS does not list *Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as a supported host system yet: https://knowledge.broadcom.com/exter...legacyId=80807
Perhaps this is a possible solution for you: Install VMware Workstation Player in Ubuntu 24.04 [Fix Module Issue]
The GitHub page it refers to says that this also should work with VMware WS before 17.x.Debian KDE & LXQt • Kubuntu & Lubuntu • openSUSE KDE • Windows • macOS X

get rid of Snap script (20.04 +) • reinstall Snap for release-upgrade script (20.04 +)
install traditional Firefox script (22.04 +) • install traditional Thunderbird script (24.04)

In the past two days, I've had enough experience with Broadcom to persuade me to abandon VMware Workstation in favor of Oracle Virtual Box. Broadcom's site is not at all user-friendly, and it has not been possible to reach support either by telephone (because you need a case number first) or by chat (since it reports that it is broken.) Thanks, Kitten for the try; I appreciate your time even if the fix didn't work.

VirtualBox or QEMU/KVM (virt-manager can even be selected during the Kubuntu 24.04 LTS installation) are both good alternatives.
The only real advantage VMware has for me is the much better graphics support/acceleration for Windows guests. I dare to say: if you don't need this you don't need to use VMware (for a private desktop computer…).Debian KDE & LXQt • Kubuntu & Lubuntu • openSUSE KDE • Windows • macOS X
