Indeed, that is what people will do and are already doing, because it's not the techno that makes the difference, it's the people.

And that is why Kubuntu stands where it stands, I'm afraid.

Kubuntu 24.04 LTS stands where it stands, because it is Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with KDE Plasma instead of GNOME. Nothing more and nothing less.

openSUSE Leap 15 = SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 (+ community repos).
MX Linux 23 = Debian 12 with KDE Plasma (+ tools from the MX repos).
LMDE 6 = Debian 12 (+ Cinnemon & tools from the Mint repos).
Linux Mint 21 = Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (+ Cinnemon & tools from the Mint repos).

All four of them even mainly use their "parents' " repos!
They didn't do anything extra to make your programs run (except possibly openSUSE): if your programs run it is by chance/because the "parent" distributions Debian 12 and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS did something - and not because MX Linux or Linux Mint/LMDE did something…

I think most of the problems I had with Plasma 6 is because my user home is so full of crud from so many versions of
so many distros and desktops! Perhaps with a new user I'd have more luck! I'd just migrate my data over and delete
my old usename.

Of course, if I had boatloads of money I still wouldn't buy a Mac!

Or, I could build myself and old PC and install IBM OS/2 Warp 4.5 again but........

Distrowatch means nothing, really, and for Kubuntu even less, since it isn't a separate distro anyway. Kubuntu packages Plasma FOR Ubuntu, as part OF Ubuntu, who help make the ISO images for the KDE "spin".

I didn't see anyone saying things didn't work they way the should. They simply said how things are and why. Complaining about it does nothing.

All Linux users have choices: We can choose; which distro to use, to get educated in programming and do the work ourselves, to get involved with a project, to donate to worthy projects, to make useful bug reports, to share knowledge (like ALL the admins here and most of the users),,, I can go on. We can even choose to use another operating system entirely if that's what's best for us. Of course, some people choose to do nothing, which is also OK.

Don't like the way things are? Do something to change them. Doing nothing is also a choice, but there's no validity in blaming others for your choices.
