Couldn't find this covered anywhere. I have an old Sony Vaio laptop. Has very old NVidia graphics. Trying to install latest Kubuntu 24.04 LTS. Been using 22.04 LTS. Did not have this issue with 22.04. Made my bootable USB from the ISO image and it all checks out fine. Plug in the USB and it boots up to where I get the initial start/splash screen that says select your language/internet connection. But then I was stumped since there are no other boxes or menus visible on my screen. Looking at several install walk thru guides I finally realized that there are 2 more boxes; "Try Kubuntu" and "Install Kubuntu" that are not visible on my laptop screen. I couldn't find any way to scroll or resize the display to show these. Rebooted and selected 'safe graphics' mode for the install. Only then can I see the full images. Normally I run a 1920x1080( 16:9 ) resolution when using 22.04. Is there a way to resize the installation screen or do I plunge ahead and install everything using the safe graphics mode? In safe mode I only get a limited choices screen sizes- 1024x768 is really the only usable one. If I plunge ahead will this cause problems with my resolution after I've completed the install?

Safe graphics mode is only for the live session and installation.
It basically enables nomodeset kernel option, which won't be used in the final installed OS.
But use the Try option and see if you can change the resolution in the live desktop before proceeding. It might give you more usable resolutions. -
Should have been clearer, I was already doing the 'Try Kubuntu" option. That only gave me 3 screen size options on the display setup. Only usable one was the 1024x768. Went ahead and did the actual install. Now I have lots of choices. But the problem is similar to what I was seeing with the initial install option screen. ALL of the options that I've tried thus far have a window size that is larger than the physical display. Specifically the right-hand side and bottom of the screen are all hidden since they are larger and 'off' the physical display. Trying to figure out how do you adjust the size of the window to match the physical size of the screen. On the Display Configuration screen there is a "Global Scale" option but this only goes from 100% and up. Never used this before and so far as I can tell it's not having any effect at all. And now after my latest screen size choice I'm just getting a black screen. Maybe I need to just roll back to 22 LTS versionComment

What laptop model, specifically? Which graphics chip? Do you recall which driver was being used?
