I am trying to help my brother upgrade his Noble Numbat to the new version. If i try to use the notification it brings up a failed update dialog box but it is empty as in no reason for the failure.

Just open Konsole and type: sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade and press Enter.Windows no longer obstructs my view.

I switched to the Nvidia 535 driver and it is upgrading now. It seems the 470 driver install got borked. Don't know if it is a bad package a bug or just a bad update that messed up the system.Just to remind users and devs that Ubuntu and its flavors have a long way to go to be as usr friendly as they should be.
