I have been using ktorrent to download the 24.04 LTS torrent since Friday, April 26. I just checked the progress. It is only at 68%! I figured I could support the distro by using the torrent instead of the main download. It appears that no one but me is using the torrent option these days. Is it worth using ktorrent to help support Kubuntu anymore or is something wrong with the torrent system? BTW: My ISP lets me download/upload @ abt 6MB/Sec. The torrent download speed reminds me of 1983 Dial up!

I did not try the Kubuntu 24.04 LTS ISO, but I do use KTorrent from time to time to download e.g. ISOs.
This works with decent speeds most of the time.Debian KDE & LXQt • Kubuntu & Lubuntu • openSUSE KDE • Windows • macOS X
Desktop: Lenovo ThinkCentre M75s • Laptop: Apple MacBook Pro 13" • and others
get rid of Snap script (20.04 +) • reinstall Snap for release-upgrade script (20.04 +)
install traditional Firefox script (22.04 +) • install traditional Thunderbird script (24.04)

There are too many factors that can effect Bittorrent speeds. Sometimes it can take a little research, 4or trial and error.
ISPs muck with this sometimes
Your router may need some port forwarding
Some peers/seeds software may not like or may ban or ignore a Bt client, or even specific versions of it (rare these days, iirc)
if you changed any bittorrent protocol settings in the client from the defaults can have weird effects
Here is my download using Qbittorrent

I just checked it is at 77% and is currently not downloading. It seems to do nothing most of the time but when it does download the speed is slower than the New Horizons Space probes dial up very slow bit rate. The team made a lousy com system to save money for other things so the probe takes about a week to send one picture of Pluto back to Earth!Just to remind users and devs that Ubuntu and its flavors have a long way to go to be as usr friendly as they should be.

See the numbers on the left in each column here.. That tells me how many people I was downloading from. The number in parentheses is the total number of people are available.
KTorrent will show something similar.
There are more than a few people seeding and downloading (and sharing while they do) so it isn't a problem with the torrent at all.
You probably aren't connecting to other people, or not many. Firewall and router settings have an effect on this, as well as a lot of other settings. It is quite common, actually, and there are more than a few how-tos and articles on troubleshooting this, and it isn't necessarily specific to any Bt client or OS. (I myself prefer Qbittorrent)

My seeders are 0 (338). Obviously, a problem exists. Checking K torrent's help.Just to remind users and devs that Ubuntu and its flavors have a long way to go to be as usr friendly as they should be.

that scratches the surface.
Also, while I haven't seen any issues with ktorrent in well over a decade, it might be useful to try a different client or two. no need to go and try all of them, but just to make sure it is your connection as opposed to the software.Last edited by claydoh; May 03, 2024, 05:30 PM.

Curious, I started KTorrent earlier today using kubuntu-24.04-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent on a previously downloaded iso (so that it started on 100%), and left it all day. It has uploaded 0 bytes.Regards, John Little
