    Kubuntu 24.04 freeze

    Hello,

I am running Kubuntu 24.04 on my desktop machine (Mesa Intel® UHD Graphics 630, intel core i7) and experience regular sudden freeze.
This usually happens when I switch off the screen power and then switches on again the screen when back. The computer usually freezes in at least 2 different ways:
    1. mouse, keyboard ... everything is frozen but i still get something shown on screen,
    2. black screen
For the 2 cases, the only solution is a hard reboot using the power button of the desktop.
Please note this occurs both on X11 and Wayland.
How can I troubleshoot this issue please?
    Thanks,

    Quick update:
i have added Rob Savoury PPA which I think enabled to get updated MESA libs: my machine now runs with Mesa 24.2.8-1ubuntu1~24.04.1 instead of a far older version.
The global system freezes have stopped.
    Thanks,

        Thanks,
it would have been something else, as this is the current stock mesa version from Ubuntu, not from a PPA . 24.2.8 is NOT extremely old, it is just over 2 months old. And even the 24.2 line began this past August.
        For example:
        Code:
        apt policy libegl-mesa0
        libegl-mesa0:
          Installed: 24.2.8-1ubuntu1~24.04.1
          Candidate: 24.2.8-1ubuntu1~24.04.1
          Version table:
         *** 24.2.8-1ubuntu1~24.04.1 500
                500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu noble-updates/main amd64 Packages
                100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
             24.0.5-1ubuntu1 500
                500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu noble/main amd64 Packages
Which Savoury PPA did you add?
He only has about 6000 of them. lol, and none of them on the sureface appear to be driver related.
(I have used some of his stuff in the past, not much lately. they can break other things as well as PPAs sometimes - the ffmpeg ones were a bit invasive in that way imo. )

That would better indicate which item was the cure here

          Hello, thanks for your reply.
You are right, the MESA libs may not be coming from the PPA. When I was having the freeze issue, the MESA package was using a 24.0.* and when updated to 24.2.8, the issue stopped.
PPA added is the free one: savoury1-ubuntu-multimedia-noble
          Thanks,

Yes, I do believe that mesa saw the updates in the past week or so.

Bad news, the issue happened yesterday again but in a different way. I had switched off my screen for a few hours as I was not there, but when i came back and switcher the screen on, i got a black screen, nothing displayed, no keyboard, no mouse... The only solution was to shutdown the computer with the power button. May be that's a different issue. I have no idea how to troubleshoot this...

Couple things. 24.04 as now now does not have Wayland installed as it's still using Plasma 5.2*. I'd check xorg logs to see what's the issue although it looks like it's power related (turn off monitor/sleep/hibernate issues). But, like I said earlier, your xorg log files is the best place to start looking.

                  Hello,
I have checks logs in order to try to under what happened.
I have found a lot of 'Config does not have a t least one screen enabled, WILL NOT save this config, this is not what user wants.' happening, basically every time I switched the screen using my KVM HDMI switch.
After searching the net, a possible solution for this message was to install upower package, which I did, even though my machine is not a laptop.
It has fixed the error messages from the logs, this weeks i have not suffered from any freeze or black screen after switching or power off the screen.
Fingers crossed, I hope this time I have the solution to the issue.
