Dell 7490 and Kubuntu 24.04

Okay, this was running 22.04 LTS. Today, I tried the upgrade and it failed. So, I am trying to install via USB.

It seems to install but once the laptop is restarted, the system complains about no bootable device.

This has been an unmitigated disaster. Good thing I decided to try this after a major meeting last week.

I am asking what Bios setting I need BEFORE installation and after installation because this should not be so @#$% difficult.

Okay,

My pain is someone else gain. I got it to install AND reboot successfully.



It was UEFI all the way.

Ongoing with the other assets:
I upgraded the Dell T7500 with Nvidia using the GUI upgrader.

I was pleasantly surprised.

I had to reinstall VirtualBox and a few other apps, but no issues so far.

However, btop only shows one CPU but I read that version 1.3.0 has a bug about that. (EDIT!!! Pres 2-3-4 and then 2-3-4 again) Curious...

Do note that 24.04.1 is just an updated ISO image, with the current updates rolled in. Anyone using 24.04 is already there.

I've now got an interesting error here with the laptop.

The background refuses to come up! I an showing this using the external display. Both it and the laptop's display now show the same thing.

Is this an easy fix?

The wife's Dell Precision T5610 upgraded without issue.

Now, back to the laptop...

systemctl restart sddm

Then, I also did this:
systemctl enable sddm

I left the defaults.

Seems that after the firmware update, I have to run systemctl restart sddm now.

systemctl restart sddm
log back in
systemctl enable sddm
do it again

Nope, seems that it is an ongoing "quirk" with the laptop and 24.04. Rebooting seems to work, but powered off and then restarting means I have to run the commands...

Even AFTER I have also had systemctl enable sddm entered.
Very, very odd.
