KDE is not starting after upgrade from 22.04 LTS

    Hello,
the upgrade seemed to worked fine, but after reboot the system is starting into console and not in kde.

what can i do to reenable kde?

    Thanks and best regards,
    Heinz

Hi, I just tried the upgrade to 24.04.1 too and I get the same issue as you. Black screen with no possibility to get into Kde. I was using the proprietary Nvidia driver on 22.04 with my Gtx710. Do you also have an Nvidia card with proprietary drivers ?

P.S I post earlier the same issue on my older rig with a GTX650ti but with a new install. I succeed with the update on another computer with an AMD card. There seems to be a major bug with this release with Nvidia prop drivers.

Ok I dig around to find a solution (Google is your friend sometimes). I manage to return to the X-org nouveau driver. Press "e" at boot to edit temporarily the boot options. First try to add the "nomodeset" argument at the end of the line saying "linux ...." and after that, do a ctrl-x or F10 to boot into KDE. This is temporary until to the next boot. You have to go into the KDE options Drivers and install the standard x-org driver. It took me 2 tries to get it to work. Once it is done, there is some clean up to do.

P.S If 24.04 doesn't work with Nvidia proprietary drivers then it is useless to me. I'll stick with 22.04.

        Hi,

I have the same problem. I just upgraded from LTS 22.04 to 24.04 LTS and everything went fine, (I managed to boot normally afterwards) until I installed the nvidia driver.

        sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

        NVIDIA-SMI 470.256.02 Driver Version: 470.256.02 CUDA Version: 11.4

After that, when booting the screen went black and it is only possible for me to enter the graphics system from the boot menu and recovery mode.

My idea is to uninstall the nvidia driver and go back to noveau, but I don't know how. From kde plasma configuration -> drivers I tried this but it didn't work. (It gives an error when trying to return to noveau, as if the nvidia driver prevented it.)

Adding the nomodeset argument as you indicated at the end of the line that says “linux....” didn't work either. When saving the changes it seems to switch to the graphical environment, the kubuntu logo comes up but it gets stuck again.

If anyone can provide any ideas on how to resolve this I would be very grateful.

You can try this link (march 2024) if you can get into the graphical interface. Use the terminal option or synaptic to remove the nvidia drivers. You have to re-install nouveau as specified after that. I didn't tried it myself though.

tl;dr: it is a graphical version of apt

In the end, after trying several ways I had to do a clean install. Maybe this one would have reversed the situation, but what I tried was quite similar. Sometimes in the rush to upgrade these things happen. Nevertheless thanks.

Now after the boot menu I have a sort of a thick line of “rice” at the bottom of my screen that doesn't disappear until the boot screen comes up. I guess it has something to do with the Nouveau driver or it's a bug, because I didn't have it before. I can't see it very well in the snapshot, but maybe it happens to someone else as well.

Now, I also have a problem with the kgpg wizard, which asks me to configure it initially when I already have my keys included in the corresponding directory. I hope to solve it little by little.

I have no nvidia but a radeon card.
nomodeset did not bring me in gui, always just terminal login.

Solved the problem by new install but now my wlan is not working.

i can see the machine in my router fritz.box but it seems to disconnect automatically.

OK, seems that my laptop is not able to use wpa3, changed the security settings to wpa2 and now its working
