Help! Can't get past sddm after upgrade to 24.04

Just upgraded to 24.04. System is old (Pentium) but no graphics card bs to deal with, it's all intel. System boots fine but after password is entered it won't get out of the login manager and into the desktop.

This person seems to have had luck with booting through recovery mode first (but doing nothing in particular in it) but I haven't. The only difference that makes is that I'm greeted with a black screen after the password is entered but the desktop won't load.

In a tty I logged in and looked at top, there are no kde processes. It's as if nothing is being loaded past sddm.

This has happened to a few of us. Log into the TTY and run "sudo apt full-upgrade". This has fixed it for most.

Unfortunately doing so just says there are no packages to upgrade whatsoever :/

(I could try connecting it to the internet via cable but it's been just a few hours since I've upgraded, I doubt running "apt update" beforehand would make any difference at this point)

Yeah, if you're not connected to the internet, apt isn't going to do anything.

I just said it worked for many of us including me. I can't say whether it will help you or not. You haven't provided any actual detail about what's happening other than it doesn't work so there's no way to offer any other suggestions.

There is not much to provide? Sddm either never goes away or goes into a black screen; no desktop is loaded; I don't even know what kind of output would be useful in debugging this situation.

I've run the upgrade, plus snap refresh... It upgraded vim, basically. Nothing changed.

So anyway, if anybody has a similar problem, here's what I did: I installed plasma-workspace-wayland. That "did to trick", which means computer is working normally, though it might not be ideal for someone who would rather fix X11.
