Does not reboot after update 24

    Hello,

I hope to find some step-by-step information on how to solve the following issue.

Yesterday, I upgraded KUBUNTU to version 24. Everything went well during installation. Later that day, I rebooted my computer but it got struck after the Grub menu. Hard reboot. I selected advanced and choose the previous kernel version (6.5). That worked fine. That was yesterday.

Today, I cannot boot into Grub. If i look in the UEFI Boot Order, I see there are several Ubuntu entries, all with the same reference.

Even trying to boot from a usb stick with the Kubuntu ISO, does not work. The computer boots every time into the BIOS instead of going to the USB Stick. Of course I changed this into the boot order.

Thank you for helping me out.

Hm, at least booting to a live USB should always work…
It is UEFI and not (legacy) BIOS, is it? Is CSM or anything similar enabled? If yes: disable it. Fast boot should also be disabled when trying to boot from USB.

    Further questions:
    Nvidia GPU by any chance?
From which version of Kubuntu did you upgrade and how?

Generally the more information you give (hardware and other details, what did you do exactly step-by-step, etc.) the better are the chances that somebody can help you.

      Hello Schwarzer Kater,

Thank you for taking the time to try to solve this.

Yes, it is UEFI and Fast Boot is disabled.

I think I came from 23.10, might be wrong. And I updated to 24.x.

First I thought the Kernel version (6.8 vs 6.5) was the culprit as I could boot in Advanced and choose a previous version.

Booting from a USB does not work. I have still the iso file of Kubuntu 23.10 and used (on Windows) Balena Etcher to flash the ISO onto the USB.

How can I upload images into here? Then I can show you the different entries in UEFI. There used to be only 2 (Windows and Ubutu). Now I have several times Ubuntu, all with the same reference number

The upgrade to 24 was just done by the system. It came as a notification and I accepted

I just tried the USB Stick on another computer, it works fine.

One step further. I could not make any significant changes to the UEFI to make the system start from the Live usb stick with kubuntu 23.10. But I managed to force it into booting from the usb (pressing F12 during startup). I am now in a USB environment (23.10), on my system I have 24 installed.

Anybody an idea what i could do next?

Do you have any data in the borked installation that you want to keep?
Also please post the output of lsblk -f -e7 and tell us which partition is for what purpose if possible.

You should also be able to upload attachments now, if you still want to post something that is of interest regarding your computer problem.

              Good morning,

I can boot now into grub, and choose the previous kernel (6.5). However, if I boot into the current version, the screen freezes and I need to do a hard reset.

Booting into recovery mode with the current kernel (6.8) works. To me it looks like an issue with the graphical driver and kernel 6.8. I can see some other information here (https://askubuntu.com/questions/1511...n-when-booting), but no solution.

Anyway, I can work again and what a relief to go back to Kubuntu instead of Window. I hope to find a solution so I can boot into normal mode.

Did you try removing splash from /etc/default/grub? This worked for some people.

Another culprit could be proprietary Nvidia GPU drivers - you did not tell us any hardware details yet…

                  Thank you for your help.

Is this the hardware details you are looking for? I tried lspci. Or do you need other information (please give me the command)

Quiet Splash is the culprit. Issue solved!

There really seems to be a bug with 24.04 and the Plymouth boot splash then - this has affected several people now…
You can leave the line active in /etc/default/grub and just remove splash or both - you might need the line in the future.

PS: Thanks for posting some hardware details - I just wanted to have a brief look to spot possible incompatible devices as the culprit.

                            Hello Snowhog,

Thank you. In a previous version, I was able to work on Wayland. Do you know if it can be activated again? Or do you advice against using it as it is in progress? I had no issues with Wayland. I really liked it as it offered some extra features with my touch screen.

The simple answer is if it works for your use case, use it. If it is problematic, don't. It's a choice, nothing more.
