    cannot login though captive portal

    Hi all,
I've searched for the topic but only several possible solutions found and none work for me.
I'm currently on a ship and cannot connect laptop through captive portal. Laptop is Lenovo yoga 900 with Kubuntu installed instead of windows. Similarly, I can download smaller files by phone but cannot install anything directly on the laptop.
IP address of the captive portal is 10.0.2.1 which I found on my Android phone. When I open that address on the laptop in Firefox and enter credentials it replies that credentials are wrong which I'm sure they aren't.
Android phone pops up a message to log in when I connect but laptop doesn't. Also, when I check exact address in chrome when logged in with Android phone, it displays:
    https://hotspot.infinityfleet.net/ho...3991%2F&reply=
But if I enter same in laptop Firefox, it doesn't open anything but displays 'cant find that page' or similar message.
Any guidance / assistance is welcome

Hi again, now I'm pretty sure it's Kubuntu issue. I've managed to boot from the same laptop ChromeOS flex, connected to same network and captive portal piped out when connected to wifi.
    Suggestions anyone?

If could be a browser issue also - like Firefox is blocking the domain or something. Try Chrome or Falkon

        Hi, thanks for the reply.
I've done that too, with same outcome with chrome. Managed to download google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb by phone and installed on Kubuntu laptop. Unfortunately it behaves the same.
Furthermore, I've tried sharing my phone connection through USB cable (WiFi - android phone logged in - USB cable - laptop) but it also cannot connect. I'm sure sharing through USB cable works as I've done it when on 4G networks.
I've also tried entering some http address I Firefox and Chrome.

There seems to me that there is some kind of query/authentication (I'm not very technical here and don't know how) from the WiFi captive portal to each machine and somehow Kubuntu doesn't recognize it. Laptop does not pop up any message when I connect to wifi (but it does if boot from ChromeOS flex from USB stick) and does not respond and therefore does not get unauthorized by network captive portal.

        Sorry for the long post.

Captive portals can be messy, especially ones that use an oddball config or something a little bit non-standard.

I know it works on Plasma 6.2, as I used it a few weeks back, had a notification like this:

This caused a small web window to open with the login page of the portal.

It *should* be in 6.1 as well, iirc.

In can't recall how it worked in Plasma 5.

But using https-only features (Firefox) can muck with these as can using VPNs and custom DNS stuff

Sometimes going to an http-only website such as http://httpforever.com can trigger the captive portal to open (as they often aren't using https since they are local and not internet-facing)

above is a screenshot of manually opened captive portal page through IP address, page when try to open some http site and network details.
Captive portal page opens, but replies every time about wrong un/pass although I'm sure it is correct.
There is no notification above the network for captive portal login.

What do You mean by using https only features (Firefox)?

How to check if I'm using plasma 5 or 6.1 or 6.2? If I'm using 5, can I upgrade to 6 without internet connection, ie downloading files elsewhere (cell phone) and applying upgrade while laptop is offline? Or else?

Being on 24.04 you have Plasma 5. There is no way to upgrade without a connection, a clean install from a downloaded ISO is the only other option, and doing so may well not solve anything.

I forgot the fact that you are on a ship so can't access those external urls like httpforever , sorry!

Some to many captive portals work on http, not the secured https. FF iirc uses https-only is the default setup I think
can you go to http://10.0.2.1 or better yet the longer url instead of the https url?

Going to an http-only website is a long used workaround for captive portals to, and not just for Linux.

Are you sure that you are sure that you are 100% positive about the login credentials?

You really may need to contact someone for more details

              Code:
              https://hotspot.infinityfleet.net/hotspotlogin?res=popup2&uamip=hotspot.infinityfleet.net&uamport=3991&userurl=http%3A%2F%2Fhotspot.infinityfleet.net%3A3991%2F&redirurl=http%3A%2F%2Fhotspot.infinityfleet.net%3A3991%2F&reply=
The long url sure seems to want to be sending you to an http page.
http://hotspot.infinityfleet.net is what I'd try next.

Hi, thanks for the help. I've tried http://hotspot.infinityfleet.net/ but it just gives "Hmm. We're having trouble..." same as other http addresses I've tried.
I'm sure about credentials, they're in English , my keyboard is us English, they work through ChromeOS flex... don't know if I should suspect anything else?
                Seems I'm stuck. 😞
I can also connect in meta quest 3, there is a captive portal log in next to network and all connects fine. However, I can't follow exactly but there seems to be some redirects in the browser before and after I enter credentials in android and meta quest 3 and ChromeOS. Like portal queries something? But I can't get to it and in Kubuntu nothing happens.
I've also tried latest Linux mint boot form USB on same laptop - same behavior. Meaning it's probably not Kubuntu only.
But ChromeOS works on that laptop??

Any further advice / solution is very welcome 🤗

Chrome, or rather Google, makes sure these work - it wasn't always the case in the past.

Well, I can always dual boot, but it seemed like something trivial and really wasn't expecting to be stuck.
There are several similar posts for Ubuntu envolving some network check...I've tried that through CLI as such option is not in Kubuntu UI but also without success. Anyhow, not many cases so I suppose it really doesn't happen often.
I'd try any further advice if available.
                    Thanks anyway..
