[SOLVED] how to add a printer

So after some Internet Searching I found how to restart cups
    Code:
print service is unavailable bad file descriptor
was the error before the cups restart

now I click on add printer and yes the system finds my printer. I select that printer and I am then prompted for
    Code:
    CONNECTION
    BOX
    examples:
    Examples:
    http://hostname:631/ipp/ http://hostname:631/ipp/port1
    ipp://hostname/ipp/ ipp://hostname/ipp/port1
    lpd://hostname/queue
    socket://hostname socket://hostname:9100

See "Network Printers" for the correct URI to use with your printer.

    Q- What is this ?
Q- What do I type in ? It is a Printer connected via USB
Q- What do I do ? (Why is it previous versions auto found printer, install or asked for the install file and it all worked)
    Thanks

My Epson printer is there. It's found as mentioned.
    Q- What next please ?

    Thanks

    EDIT:
    Found This searching
    [HTML]https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr/1.7.17-4build2[/HTML]

    AND Epson's web page
    [HTML]https://epson.com/Support/Printers/All-In-Ones/WorkForce-Series/Epson-WorkForce-WF-7720/s/SPT_C11CG37201#drivers[/HTML]
"" ATTENTION: Your operating system may not be detected below. It's important that you manually select your OS in the Operating System drop-down menu below to ensure you're viewing only compatible files.""
Yeah good one Epson !!! The only option I had was 15 versions of Windows, multiple MacOS, and one (1) lonely "linux", not even with a capital letter at the start

    ALSO

I search Synaptic for Epson ESC drivers, and the only option is to "Remove" or "Completely Remove"... No Re-Install....
Q- Could this be an issue I raised elsewhere about only having "Focal" as update sources... NO Numbat (PS Please respond here && [HTML]https://www.kubuntuforums.net/forum/currently-supported-releases/kubuntu-24-04-nitpick-noble-lts/desktop-environment-support-ac/685501-problems-after-problems-i-ll-list-here#post685526[/HTML]

I have no experience with your set up, but can make a general observation: these days printers are normally connected to your local network, either wirelessly, or by ethernet cable, or even by USB cable to the router. Then, plasma finds the printer on the network at start up and configures it automatically, no downloads required. So, if you can, you can save a lot of trouble by not connecting the printer to the computer but to the network.

<old boring story>I bought a Brother MFC in about 2017 and had to muck about with various Brother web sites to get a driver, and follow arcane instructions to install it. Then, in about 2018 a motherboard problem caused my main install to get hosed and I ended up installing Kubuntu from scratch and restoring data from backup. In all the drama I forgot all about the printer. A month or so later, when picking up a print out, I suddenly remembered I'd done nothing to reinstall the printer... it had been automatically set up, and I was blissfully printing away.</old story>

Sounds like a plan, but wont work for me. My house is in the "country" and the Network is elsewhere. Unless you have a 40metre USB cable ?

Oh! BTW. The we must follow what KDE expects us to do is a M$ thing As Far as I Am Concerned.... It's stupid and very much UN-Linux. I could rant on, but I'll save it for the soap box

        Thanks jlittle for the reply

          Something WEIRD !!!!!

I went to print a website from Firefox, and my Epson printer is there !!!!
          BUT
Still NOT in the "system Settings --> Printers"
          AND
The ""Epson Scan 2"" software is still there and appears to be working. I just need to confirm this by finding something to scan

What the Heck is going on ? Please ?

Weird indeed. I expect the printer is there and usable, but system settings trips on something.

For me scanner software (skanlite, skanpage, xsane, ...) search for scanners every time they start. A little annoying, because it takes a while, but one doesn't have to set anything up ahead of time.

I gave up trying to understand. It's arcane CUPS carry on, I suspect.

No, not at all. I'm prone to rants...

No, I gave up on understanding CUPS; it can be a dark art...

<rant>IME Windows can be worse. At my last work I got Windows in a VM (qemu/kvm) to print to our company printer, and I was the only one in our team, all bare metal or hyper-v windows, who could print.

As long as I didn't offend, all is great. Still puzzled as to why 24.04 wont 'detect' the printer in printer settings, yet Office and FF did. Just stupid and weird

Found this, and a download of hplip .. This wasn't on the Epson driver webpage. All I got was am .iso with 20 folders with a lot of unknown stuff inside the folders. I didn't even know what to do.

First link has (way down the page) a link to download the driver as a .run

                    Hope this helps
