plasma-discover won't do anything, even after reinstallation

Discover not working at all has been a problem for me for weeks, and likely months. I have been defaulting to Synaptic, which always works. But Discover ought to work, and in a recent dialog here about another problem I was advised to use it as part of a solution to my problem. But I can't.
    .
Maybe a week ago it started working - for about 2 days. Big surprise, and I cannot explain this. Then it reverted to its usual behaving of doing nothing when launched.

When I click a taskbar notification of updates, the Discover icon appears and there is a little arrow swirling around in it, then it just vanishes. End of story. Not really useful!

When I try to launch Discover from the command line - using `plasma-discover` - the cursor moves to a new line, then nothing at all happens.

I just completely installed all plasma-discover elements that Synaptic told me were installed. It made NO difference at all.

What are my options at this point?

Can you verify that the following packages are indicated as installed (via Synaptic Package Manager):

    plasma-discover-common
    plasma-discover-backend-fwupd
    plasma-discover-backend-snap
<<< If you aren't using Snaps, or have "de-Snapped" your system, this (likely) won't be installed.
    plasma-discover-notifier
    plasma-discover

If you are using Flatpaks, you would/should also see plasma-discover-backend-flatpak
