Today I updated my computer (running 23.04 with Kubuntu backports enabled) with a series of kernel updates. The new one is 6.2.0-1007-lowlatency which is supposed to boot the computer but doesn't get much past the filecheck notice, just after Grub. There were also 4 similar kernel updates, associated with 6.2.0-1005-oracle (images, modules objects for Nvidia andsignature for Nvidia. I don't recall ever seeing these before and wonder they are appearing now. A new update this evening erased the oracle kernels, but they're still on Discover. What should I do? The computer only boots when I go back to the 6.2.0-24 kernel, but that's not at the top of the list. I also see that there are some 25 updates held back, so I don't know whether to erase the lowlatency kernel or just wait until things get sorted out. And just what is a lowlatency kernel anyway? And the oracle kernels? I use btrfs, by the way,so I can go back if things get out of hand. Any ideas?

There already is another thread about this, see: https://www.kubuntuforums.net/forum/...kernel-updates
PS: In my Kubuntu 23.04 installation (with Kubuntu Backports) nothing like this happens - neither in CLI nor in Discover.Last edited by Schwarzer Kater; Jul 01, 2023, 04:33 AM.Debian KDE & LXQt • Kubuntu & Lubuntu • openSUSE KDE • Windows • macOS X

lowlatency is a special needs kernel. Unless you're doing professional audio recording, you don't need it. There actually nothing "strange" about it not working for you, it doesn't normally work out-of-the-box.
Stick to generic kernels and you'll be fine.

I have eliminated the orale and lowlatency kernels, and it works like before, with one problem: Discover still wants to install the new kernels, and so does nala (apt). How can I get rid of these things for good? I checked the other thread, but since I have a different kernel and don't have Virtualbox installed, I thought it might be something. I don't see how I can get rid of these kernels for updates, and I don't want to have to use Discovery and have to deselect the kernels every time. There must be a better way. And I still don't understand why these kernels were in the update area to begin with--it's never happened before.

A good place to start also is your /etc/apt/sources.list and the contents of your /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ .
If you know the names of the (kernel-) packages that are suggested to be installed, you could use e.g. apt-cache depends and apt-cache rdepends to find out more.
You could possibly look through the log files in /var/log/apt/history.log* to determine how they got installed in the first place, too.Last edited by Schwarzer Kater; Jul 01, 2023, 02:58 PM.Debian KDE & LXQt • Kubuntu & Lubuntu • openSUSE KDE • Windows • macOS X

I think there is a packaging bug in Ubuntu's Nvidia driver packages/dependencies somewhere, or maybe the drivers PPA with NVIDIA packages, maybe. I am seeing sporadic mentions of this in various *buntu places. No solid info on fixes, or causes.
*maybe* uninstalling the drivers, updating, and then reinstalling them. Then cleaning up any unwanted kernels.
If memory serves, something similar has happened once or twice in the past.
Goodness, I sure do miss having an Nvidia card.
(I am actually half serious, finding and fixing can be useful info to pass on to others)

Content of /etc/apt/sources.list- Open the Dolphin file manager.
- In the left panel under "Devices" click on your hard drive.
- In the main window open the folder "etc", then open the folder "apt".
- Right-click on the file "sources.list" and "open with Kate".
- You can post the contents of the file here now within CODE tags for us to check.

I am running kubuntu 23.04 and yesterday Discover downloaded the kernel update and I found the same siituation with newly installed kernel 6.2.0-1007-lowlatency. The process stuck imediately after boot. I got back to 6.2.0-24. After verifying the packages downloaded and installed I checked using synaptic and I found that "linux-modules-nvidia-470-6.2.0-1007-lowlatency" was not installed. I made the install with synaptic booted again and now things work.

As oshunluvr already has pointed out: a lowlatency kernel is more targeted towards audio- or a/v-production than general use.
It should not "install by itself".
It seems that those (unwanted?) kernels could have something to do with proprietary Nvidia drivers.
In the meantime: has anybody already found out where they actually came from (for example see post # 5)?
I unfortunately cannot do that, because I don't get them at all in my Kubuntu 20.04 LTS, 22.04 LTS or 23.04 (and perhaps because I fortunately don't have to use Nvidia anymore on my own computers).Last edited by Schwarzer Kater; Jul 02, 2023, 09:46 AM.Debian KDE & LXQt • Kubuntu & Lubuntu • openSUSE KDE • Windows • macOS X

Copy the text in Kate - paste the text in your answer here - select the text and click on the CODE button (it has a # symbol on it).
At the beginning and at the end of your pasted text there should be CODE tags now.Debian KDE & LXQt • Kubuntu & Lubuntu • openSUSE KDE • Windows • macOS X
