    Wayland vs X11 video problem

As test, I switched to the Wayland compositor and found that, on reboot, my preferred video player, smplayer, would not display the video content, but the audio stream was playing fine on the black screen.

I changed back to X11, rebooted and smplayer video playback returned to normal.

This is just an FYI note and I'll be testing Wayland in the future for this and other anomalies.

Thank you for sharing this observation!

I am looking forward to your further findings (there are currently even some things that work in Wayland that don't in X11 - like the screen recording functionality of Spectacle).
