I've just upgraded from 22.04 to 22.10, and am using the btrfs file system. My question is: should I make an incremental snapshot of the new @ subvolume for backup, or should I send it directly to my backup disk? I always make incremental backups for both @ and @home, but since this is a new version of the distro, I'm if it makes any difference or not in speed, considering that the @ subvolume now has a lot of differences from the previous one (I presume).

I do incrementals as usual after a release upgrade. Because a lot has changed, it takes longer than usual, and takes up more space. But there's no advantage to starting again. Each snapshot does not depend on the others directly; there's no chain starting at the first which gets longer and more prone to breakage as more incrementals are done, as with some other incremental backup schemes.
(I suppose you could construct such a chain if you have to back up to a non-btrfs medium, by doing lots of sends and only doing receive when restoring. However, such are the advantages of proper btrfs send/receive the next time I have to backup to another file system, typically NTFS, I'm going to try using a file with a btrfs in it, and mount it as a loop device.)Regards, John Little
