[SOLVED (sort of)] Monitor crash after today apt upgrade

I just did an apt update and now one of my two monitors crashes (goes black) when I open or even close a browser window. My setup has been super smooth for over 1yr with weekly apt updates and this just happened today. First glitch in a long time of updates. I've got a lot of work to do! Display settings viewed from the other monitor look fine/normal. Help!

More info: example sequence: 1)boot up from a cold start 2)log in 3) displays start normal and empty. 4) click browser (brave or Firefox) 5)display goes black for maybe 5 sec then returns and browser is open. 6)click close (x)on browser 7)display crashes for 5 sec and the reopens with closed browser.

      8) meanwhile 2nd display works normally (but it's too small to get my work done!)

        Additional Info: Syslog says:
        Sep 21 13:08:27 blake-NUC dbus-daemon[817]: [system] Activating service name='org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthel
        per' requested by ':1.77' (uid=1000 pid=2056 comm="/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libexec/org_kde_powerdev" label=
        "unconfined") (using servicehelper)
        Sep 21 13:08:27 blake-NUC dbus-daemon[817]: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.kde.powerdevil.backl
        ighthelper'

        which certainly looks germain!

Based on a similar post I found from an older upgrade, lowering my monitor refresh rate from 60Hz to 30Hz solved the problem. Not very satifactory!
