    Kup keeps failing

I am back to trying Kup but for days keep getting errors. Not a single backup went through without errors. To me that is alien language. First it says : "repair: succeeded" and in the next line "Repair failed" - which average user is supposed to understand that? Can anyone shed some light? Thanks

Kup is starting bup repair job at Sunday, 14. Mai 2023 20:19:14 CEST

    bup -d /media/pete/backup/Kup fsck -r -j 4
error: inflate: data stream error (invalid distance too far back)
fatal: pack has bad object at offset 206897404: inflate returned -3
    b'pack-57de1c5a81283a7eb2246cd6ddc3d28c22153719' git verify: failed (1)
    b'pack-737cd5b5286bd21a6685284bc4506475ff992a29' par2 repair: succeeded (0)

    Exit code: 1
Repair failed. Your backups could still be corrupted! See above for details.

The messaging references two different files (pack-57de1c5a81283a7eb2246cd6ddc3d28c22153719 and pack-737cd5b5286bd21a6685284bc4506475ff992a29) located in the /objects/pack/ directory somewhere in the destination drive or directory, and two different operations ('git verify' and 'par2 repair')
I am going to guess some of the backup files, or the specific version of them, are corrupt.
But it could also be a bug, perhaps.

Sure, this is not friendly, but this is the messaging that Bup spits out, and Kup probably has no way of knowing anything more. Is Windows freeware any different?

I do use Kup myself, with one versioned and two sync plans, though I back up to a NAS now after my external USB backup drive started failing. I can't recall if the errors were similar or not, but the files were corrupt, and even wiping and reformatting the thing didn't clear out the issues.
I haven't had corrupted files since. My oldest versioned set is from last June.

If you do get Kup running in a satisfactory manner, the tool does not automatically prune old version sets in any way, so you may want to go in and prune manually if needed. That is something to be aware of.

Thanks, I could not find "prune". I only have Duplicate, Configure, Remove. Where is that button?

          Thanks, that pruning worked.

          But now I see

          Generating recovery information
          "517.839 of 518.218 files"

Why are there files missing in the backup and which once are missing?

It is creating the recovery data, not performing a recovery operation.

it is generating the data/checksums/etc to be able to attempt a recovery later on, if needed.
