    Seeking kernel advice

    Hi all,

I am currently running kernel 5.15.0-52.58-generic (which afaik is the latest version) under Kubuntu 22.04.1 (continuously updated) on my Toshiba Satellite L870-18v (Intel I3 Dual Core 4 Thread, 8 GB RAM). Give that this system is a bit old, would it help improve system performance if I were to switch to a low latency kernel such as kernel 5.15.0.52-58-lowlatency, or would this change be a waste of time on such an old system ? I use the system for web browsing, video replay, and small scale software development.

No, a low-latency kernel won't be useful on most systems in general. it IS useful in certain situations, such as audio recording and embedded single-purpose systems.
I doubt it will be useful for a general purpose system such as yours, and I don't think it will make things any more performant in your usage.

However, there is nothing wrong in giving it a try, as installing this does not replace your existing kernels, and adds an extra entry to your grub menu. along with your others.

      Good morning claydoh,

Thank you for such a swift reply.

Oh well, I just thought it might help give a little boost in performance given how code is always growing.

      One last thing. What are
      embedded sings-purpose systems.
? Are they an offshoot of audio recording ?

      Thanks again,

      Stuart

Again there is nothing lost other than some time if you installed the rt kernel and gave it a go. It might work fine for you.
