If I change the permissions after opening a file do I need to do something else to be able to save changes to the open file? It is marked as read-only but I made changes that need to be saved.

Just to remind users and devs that Ubuntu and its flavors have a long way to go to be as usr friendly as they should be.

I already tried and it won't let me save. I had to save using a different file name. That's why I asked because it wouldn't work. I had to shut down my computer so that's why I had to use a different file name. I couldn't wait for an answer. I understand though as I posted during the night and odds are if you post at night you probably won't get an answer for a few hours Kubuntu forums are worldwide so sometimes I get lucky.Just to remind users and devs that Ubuntu and its flavors have a long way to go to be as usr friendly as they should be.

It depends on what has the file "open". Document-focussed software, like editors (vim, kate, nano), usually don't keep files open (in the OS) when you work on them, and tend to do their own thing when you try to write out the file. Some just write the file, some remember the permissions and say no, but you can override it.Regards, John Little

Wondering why a file that you're working on would not be read-write for you? You have stored it somewhere your user account doesn't have access to?
