[DESKTOP] Startup Disk Creator - What a joke

    Another dumb note....
I was using the built in "Startup Disk Creator" to create bootable USB version of whatever .ISO I needed to use at the time. At one Point I needed to transfer some data, and attempted to use "KDE Partition Manager" to erase the USB... IT WOULDN'T.. Not only did I have UEFI on the USB I wasn't allowed to erase it. As soon as I did, that partition was automatically re-added, and it had two(2) "Hidden" partitions I couldn't get rid of. I even attempted to change the USB Drive from GPT to MBR, but that option was "Greyed-out" under "KDE Partition Manager".
I wa FORCED to install and use Gparted (as is used in Rescuezilla).

What a PoJ software "Startup Disk Creator" is... I re-installed Unetbootin...

Some Years ago, I somehow created a multi-boot USB..
As In I had Clonezilla and a couple of different .ISO images, for emergency boot to fix PEBKAC errors...

When the USB was booted, you were given a menu of what was available, and you could select what you wanted to do

Q- Does anyone know what I am talking about, Please ?
Q- Is this still 'updated' for today (24.04) ?

    Thanks

    No, not really

But, it is much more likley that the USB stick has suffered a corruption on its partition table. I have seen it quite often on USB drives that I have used regularly to 'burn' ISO images -- the tool used has not been a factor in this. Flash drives are not very robust sometimes. I use dd to wipe the table, or to wipe the whole thing. (a PITA long time on a 256Gb thumb drive, lol). I have never had this problem using external HDDs or SSDs , including old nvme drives in usb enclosures.

Unetbootin has been utter garbage for successful boot disk creation, in my own experiences. I stopped using it a long time ago when it was at a 50% rate of non-booting burns. Perhaps it is better now.

Ventoy. No "burning" and re-burning. Drag ISO images to the thumb drive. Done.

Quite possible a USB error.... Most likely not. As I mentioned, "KDE Partition Manager" failed. It wouldn't delete the two hidden partitions, and when I selected the primary, I deleted it, but as soon as the task was completed it returned...
Yet 2 minutes later with gparted, it was corrected.
      I am thinking it's a KDE thing.

Nope, the writing process for most all of these tools is the same no matter the GUI, and I have seen instances where Gparted did work -- for a bit. And some where even command line foo didn't work, let alone the Gnome and KDE UI tools.

Just my $.32AUD, from MANY years of using USB sticks and other drives for multiple disk images across all the tools and image types.
And since moving to Ventoy, I have had ZERO problems that are exactly like what you see here. Zero Nada. Zilch. This is because Ventoy doesn't involve constantly writing and re-writing to the partition tables and other sections of a drive every time -- the "burning" process is literally a bit-for-bit copy of an entire drive (the image) to a real drive. Ventoy, aside from housing as many ISOs as one can fit, it is just copying the files to the drive space, no 'burning' involved at all.

I had a really funny teacher for Science, 1/2 of one year. He responded once about somebody complaining about the grade they should have received. Asking for 1% Higher. Or something. It was too long ago to remember exactly
          Anyhow
          He responded with
"Look. It's 2/3rds of 1/2 of a flea's butt".... So I rounded it out by dividing your results by zero"
          He also taught Mathematics.

Myself and two other students "laughed". A few giggled or similar. Most everyone else looked very puzzled, and the person who started the complaint, looked very unhappy.

PS. I am reasonably sure that on my next test, I got 92%. And I checked my answers with some other students afterwards, with our books. (Something us punching bags, sorry G33k(S) did, and we were sure I would get an 84%-86%.. We figured out that our laughter at his comment was noted by that teacher... He was good, and funny, even thou he maintained a strict classroom, including no laughing.
A lot better than that Paedophile from the Flea's Butt mentioned earlier. I aced the next test and received a scored of 62%. One of the "sexy female students", received 98% and she missed 6 questions (out of 15)... She told us. And that PaedoTeacher would stop speaking when she moved around the room. We all noticed it, and reported it.
          You guess the rest.

But I do understand, NOW, what you are referring to... Lack of sleep and a some other medical issues.... Me Not Happy

Thanks claydoh for the response. Should help someone out at least

I'm a big fan of Ventoy too. Before it I used a similar project that was less comprehensive.

When copying an iso to USB storage, I do have to wait until Linux completes writing. Dolphin or cp tells me it's finished, but most of the iso is still buffered in free memory. It will wait if I click something like "safely remove", or reboot.
