    Upgrading from 20.04LTS to 22.04LTS fails due to apt version dependency error

    I have a multi-user system that truly is not very complicated, but I thought since I have a solid backup done with dd on a separate SSD it would be a good opportunity to try the upgrade process since this is first time I've had the chance(20.04 was my first install of Kubuntu after initially trying out a few other distros). The upgrade is failing with a strange error when running the 'sudo do-release-upgrade -m desktop' command. I get an error that the upgrade depends on apt version >= 2.0.4, however version 2.0.2 is the latest in the focal repository and I'm unsure how to resolve this.

    **Important information - I had ppa's for cubic wizard, simplescreenrecorder, mkusb, and flightgear in my repositories list. I have a suspicion that something with these caused the issue but I'm not sure, either of it being the cause or the best way to remedy it if it was the cause. If it was, would it just be best to remove those packages and repositories before trying again?

    Any information or ideas would be much appreciated.

    Edit - I found out that having the setting unchecked for "Recommended Updates" in the "Updates" tab of "Software Sources" will keep your Kubuntu version from trying to upgrade (at least it seems to have something to do with the point upgrades). I had unchecked due to having slower internet and did not realize what all it was for. So with the "Recommended Updates" checked again, I was able to begin downloading the upgrade.

    Welcome to the forum!

    When I apt policy apt in my Kubuntu 20.04.6 I get:
    installed version = 2.0.9
    from = http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-updates/main amd64 Packages

    Did you do a sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade and a reboot before the do-release-update?

    What does your cat /etc/apt/sources.list say?

    PS: By the way - *Ubuntu's do-release-upgrade normally disables third-party PPAs automatically.

      I appreciate the quick response.

      Ok, the first thing I found is that you showed your version as 20.04.6, but I looked up how to find the OS version and from lsb_release -a I get 20.04.1. However, I did in fact just run the sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade and rebooted before the do-release-update. Any ideas what would keep me at 20.04.1 instead of it updating?

      I'm not sure the best way to post the sources.list output on here, I have never been one to use forums so I suppose I need a little instruction here.

      To the PS, I think I read that about the upgrade disabling third-party PPA's somewhere around here on a post but I didn't know if those software were trying to force an apt version dependency, though I did disable those PPA's in the Software and Updates and tried again before I got on here to ask. I still have a lot to learn how things work, I came from windows not that long ago and just learning to program at all. I have managed to solve some dependency issues so that's partly why I had the thought I suppose.

        To answer your question as a non-forum-admin:
        I think it would be best to post the output of cat /etc/apt/sources.list within "CODE" tags (-> Toggle Advanced Editor).

          Schwarker, I appreciate you taking the time to give me a lesson on how to use the forum. I don't suppose I will need to post the output now as I resolved the issue, but I will definitely keep it in mind.
