[SOLVED] Black screen aftter recent update

After an update today, (one of many this week, I think it was mesa's turn) I get a black screen with mouse cursor that won't move.
A search suggests it maybe broken graphics drivers.
    I can't bring up a terminal, but have a live 2024.04 USB.
Can I fix the issue with the USB, or would it be quicker to back up the home folder and reinstall?

Are you able to boot into the previous kernel?
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

I am currently backing up via the live USB (so slow ).
From recollection, the kernel update was on Tuesday, todays "phased" update was some mesa files and others.
As soon as the backup is done, I am going to try to get grub (as my system is set to bypasses grub) and try recovery mode, I read I can hold the shift key when booting the system to get grub.
I'll also try the previous kernel too.
      Thanks for responding.

        HAZAH!! Got my system back.
After attempting to use the live USB to back up, I held down the shift key and got grub and started the recovery mode for the recent kernel.
Chose dpkg to fix broken packages and then dropped to root in recovery and tty'd to log in and was told I could upgrade another 16 packages (which happened to be the same as the ones that stuffed the system) then rebooted to my system with success.
I was somewhat frustrated that the live USB is so slow and took nearly 8hrs to copy the Home folder to my back-up external drive, mea culpa, I wish I knew how to get grub before I started backing up.
        Thanks again, Snowhog for responding.

That sounds like the drive was connected to a USB 2 port. Some laptops do not give much indication, if they do at all, as to the speed of each port. (I used to have a work laptop that was black with the drive's type given in slightly raised black lettering; I had it a year before seeing the lettering.)

May well have been USB2, I was on the DT PC and I have Black, Blue and Red USB ports I have forgotten which is which. Iirc the black is 2 and blue are 3 and the red ones are for gaming.

For an Admin, I can't seem to edit this post as SOLVED. When I try to edit the first post, the site says "working" and lags for a long time, then nothing. If someone could mark it as solved, that would be great.
