@Schwarzer Kater: Those errors occurred because I was using my local library internet connection. I was able to install the hwe kernel this morning no problem using my small MiFi.
@jlittle: Thanks for the software properties tip. I implemented an update this morning with the software properties as is and it performed without any noticeable problem. However, I will keep your suggestion very much in mind.
Update: The keyboard now sort of works. After a cold boot, the keyboard sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. At the moment, the workaround seems to be to follow a cold boot with a warm reboot. After that, the keyboard seems to work. This is exactly what I had to do before typing up this post using the laptop keyboard.
