    [RESOLVED] Cannot connect to irc.libera.chat

    Hi all,

I am having trouble connecting to libera.chat and irc.libera.chat using Konversation Version 1.8.21123 on Jammy Jellyfish (fully updated). I have worked through the steps given on https://userbase.kde.org/Konversatio...tication#step5 and still cannot connect. The repeating log is shown below.

[12:44] [Info] Looking for server irc.libera.chat (port 6697)...

[12:45] [Info] Trying to reconnect to irc.libera.chat (port 6697) in 10 seconds.
[12:45] [Info] Looking for server irc.libera.chat (port 6697)... <-- Log repeats from this line.

Is there something blatant that I have overlooked ?

Is there some web page that I need to visit in order to register my ident/hostname/whatever (!) ?

The url you gave is broken, but it looks like SASL hasn't been set up properly on the client, and/or you are behind a VPN or some provider that has its IP ranges restricted to requiring SASL as they have been used too many times for bad behavior.
      https://libera.chat/guides/sasl
If you are behind a VPN, try without, just to see if this may be the case.

        Hi Snowhog,

Thank you for such a swift reply and please accept my apologies for such a slow response.

I had already tried logging in to libera chat on a previous occasion and tried again just before composing this posting, using the web interface shown in the article for which you very helpfully provided a link. Both attempts resulted in the responses shown below which were displayed above the Nick text entry box on the web site..

Closing Link: 185.69.144.214 (SASL authentication to a NickServ account with a verified email address is required to connect from your current network. Please see https://libera.chat/guides/sasl for configuration assistance.)

I was not using a VPN in both instances and I have not set up a proxy on/for my machine. Please see also my response to @claydoh.

So, have you followed the instruction in the link I gave (same as the one in the error in web chat)? It has instruction on how to set up SASL authentication in Konversation and other irc clients.
Your IP address or ISP seems in a range that has been restricted by libera due to too many bots/spam/etc.
In any case, you will need to be contacting Libera for assistance if that link does not help.

            Hi claydoh,

Thank you for your swift reply and please accept my apologies for my slow response.

Please also accept my apologies for supplying a broken link. The information that I used to set up Konversation is shown at

            https://userbase.kde.org/Konversatio...authentication

I followed those steps very slowly and carefully, ensuring that the various fields in the setup dialogs were supplied with data that was identical to that shown in the screenshots in the steps shown on the website.

I was not using a VPN on my previous attempts to login to libera nor on the attempt that I have just made. I am beginning to think that your point that "...some provider that has its IP ranges restricted to requiring SASL ..." may be the case here. This point has left me somewhat confused as if you view the steps given on the web site at the link above, you will see that those steps are those required for setting up SASL. I am also wondering if the provider "in question" is libera or my ISP.
I will try working (carefully!) through "Nickname Registration", again(!) at

            https://libera.chat/guides/registration

            and see if that helps.

Your ISP, or rather some range of addresses it has.

You may still need to have SASL enabled in Konversation if Libera has such resatriction on tyour IP address range for some reason.

SASL access only restrictions are typically applied to address ranges that are the source of frequent policy violations due to providing easy access to dynamic addresses to a wide range of users. These ranges are typically used by VPN, cloud-computing, and mobile network providers. These restrictions are not targeted at individual users.
If it helps, they do cross-feed most of the irc channels to Telegram
              https://telegram.me/kubuntu_support
I don't know why they don't seem to be on matrix that I can see. IRC is such a pain in the tush.

                Hi claydoh,

Thank you for your most recent response. I installed and ran Telegram but, sadly, a working mobile phone is needed in order for Telegram to work. It appears that a user must use their phone camera to scan in a QR code to set up a connection/account. Unfortunately my mobile phone is dead. (I know, who doesn't have a working mobile phone these days ?!)

Still, I do very much appreciate the thought.

                  Hi all,

Just a small update. The reason that I wanted to get connected to irc.libera.chat was to get in contact with the Kate text editor devs. Well, I managed to make contact through their matrix room. Still, I want to thank you both for all your help. Although the irc problem has not been solved, contact was nonetheless achieved through another channel.

Thanks again for all your help. It is much appreciated.
