PS I wish I could find the run files for the past/older hplip versions. I don't find them on the HP site (yet) ... I might try a version just above the version I have with 22.04.

All I know is that my HP printer works well with hplip 3.21.12+dfsg0-1, and scans well with xsane 0.999-11ubuntu1, and that the latest HPLIP from HP did nothing to help, and contributed some to failure.
Simple solution. However, I have been through ALL the BS hops, loops, and poorly communicated instructions of the past to get to this point.

Just a comment for now.
In a post above, I mentioned I tried the very latest version of hplip downloaded and installed (by automatic method). And there was a printing problem, where my printer acted as if I was printing on 8 x 10" rather than 8.5 x 11"
I think this is a bug of sorts. Don't have time to file such. But a comment here:
Terminology! "Letter" can be any of the three (as seen in print option menus):
Letter
Letter 8x10
Letter 8.5x11
and the other common legal size in USA is:
Legal 8.5x14
Somehow, this is relevant! For example, by using the various option menus, I can set things so everything reads Letter 8.5x11, even the preview. I press the print button and the printer acts as if the paper is 8x10, thus printing a weird combination of margins etc. on the paper.
This has to do with hplip, I am convinced, but can't really prove it.An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way. Charles Bukowski

Double check the actual printer(s) settings in System Settings. Mine always default to A4, and setting the correct paper there took care of sizing issues for me even if setting the correct size in an application's unique print options.
I had to do this with my last printer, before I broke it, and of course promptly forgot about this when I started printing with the new one.

Menus where, exactly?
CUPS (enter in the browser window: localhost:631): under Administration
In LibreOfficeWriter under File > Print under Properties and Page Layout.
In LibreOffice Writer under File > Printer Settings : Properties
Maybe I should set defaults at A4. I never understood that, I see it used a lot, even though it is not our standard inch measure of 8.5x11.
I sure got things screwed up here doing all that testing/experimenting! My default under the File > Print menu for Preview size is now 8x10!! Even though I set the paper size at 8.5x11, and the preview shows at 8.5x11, it actually prints as if it is something else (I think like 8x10).
Thinking to delete all printers everywhere that refer to my NEW printer and start over without using anything from hplip.

Still, 8x10 doesn't correlate to any standard paper size very closely, even A4 is pretty close to 8.5x11. Very odd.
But seems to happen to people sporadically:

And not necessarily on Linux:

Right, about 8x10. However, 8x10 is a standard portrait-picture size, though. I also ran into those folks encountering 8x10 issues.
Edit: I see you've read those posts! 'tried everything/setting possible' No need to read another one here, mine is the exact same thing!
Right now, I have a Writer doc open, File > Print shows a menu called "Print" (labeled at the top). The preview shows an 8x10 preview.
Page Layout Paper Size says 8.5in x 11in -- and the drop-down menu gives options for Size, including one labeled "8in x 10in".
At the top of that open menu, it says "Printer Deskjet 2700." Next to that, it says "Properties."
Click "Properties" and it shows:
Paper and Device
Click Paper.
"Use only paper size from printer preferences": check box. That check box I left un-checked, not checked. I have also tried checking that box and selecting 8.5x11 -- either way.
But it won't print by 8.5x11. And if I return to that Properties box, it has reverted back to 8x10!
I tried every combination/permutation of choices, and every time I get 8x10 when actually pressing the Print button to print.
Thanks.Last edited by Qqmike; Nov 02, 2023, 02:02 PM.An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way. Charles Bukowski

I wonder why I'd be getting the following message when trying to print a test page:
Code:held since Fri 03 Nov 2023 10:25:51 AM MDT "Unable to open print file: Permission denied"

Thanks, Snowhog, I may need that.
Another seemingly big problem! I can not delete a printer! Not in System Settings and not in CUPS at localhost:631.
I do a 'delete printer,' but when I refresh the page or return to that printer list, the deleted printer is listed again.
Something is really screwed up here.
Btw, I returned that printer, HP Deskjet 2752e.
From Best Buy, I bought another printer, HP Deskjet 2734e. Have not yet had time to mess with it, but I feel I need to delete that previous troublesome printer from the system.
I am NOT using hplip, btw.
Never in Linux have I encountered such problems with simple HP printers. An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way. Charles Bukowski

When I am in System Settings > Printers, there is a "Configure" button. When I press it, nothing happens. This has been the case throughout my long ordeal here.
And as I said above, I can not delete a printer. It disappears but then reappears.
Where the heck are the permissions? Shouldn't it be under System Settings > Users?
I am the only one listed there as 'mike' as administrator (Account Type);
and there are no groups. Like there is no printer group, lp.
Btw, I am listed here:
Code:groups mike adm cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin lxd sambashare

I just used Muon to re-install cups and cups-browsed. That seems to have gotten rid of the printer I deleted (but that kept appearing in the list of printers).
Should I have gutenprint (drivers) installed on my system (I presently do not have it).
If so, which package? There is printer-driver-gutenprint, as well as some other packages.
Or ...
should my stock 22.04 already have enough print drivers somewhere?
And I still wonder about this:
When I am in System Settings > Printers, there is a "Configure" button. When I press it, nothing happens.

I'll record this here now as it may be useful (to anyone).

Answers are directed at this, Driverless printing, the IPP-over-USB section, and the conclusion as I read it is that in this case "driverless" (Ipp-over-USB), you shouldn't have HPLIP.
https://wiki.debian.org/CUPSDriverlessPrinting
I'm still working on mine, on the new printer 2734e, will get to it soon, I hope this weekend. If using USB, I won't be using HPLIP. And, again, as you guys have said, the wireless connection method may be easiest. Although, the 'driverless / IPP-over-USB' should also be automatic. An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way.
