    [DESKTOP] Issues with a new install [CLOSED]

    I installed Kubuntu 24.04 recently on an Asus laptop, and at first it seemed all was well. I liked the idea of avoiding a lot of compiling as is necessary with Gentoo, which I have always used in the past. And, I have always used KDE with an Nvidia driver, which has been flawless. Also, I have used this laptop for the last couple years with Gentoo, and there have no lockups of the type that I will describe. I have no reason to believe that there are any hardware issue.

    However, I have a couple problems, one of which is a showstopper:

    When watching a video, the screen will freeze. The sound keeps going, the video continues, but the picture does not change. The mouse moves around just fine. Any other windows, such as Konsole are frozen as well. It turns out, however, that if I give a console window focus, it is actually responsive, just that there is no feedback to video. Once I realized that, I captured various logs to files. Then, when I reboot, I can see the contents: I have tried the following logs. I didn't see any smoking guns in there, which was a surprise.
    * journalctl -n 200
    * cat dmesg_log
    * tail -n 100/var/log/syslog

    My hardware:
    Asus laptop: ROG Strix G733CX
    GPU GA103M [GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Mobile]

    The default install for the video was nouveau. Once I experienced the first lockup, I concluded it might be related to that module and switched to Nvidia. However, it has not gone away.

    Another minor problem is that the keyboard LEDs, do not turn back on if I close the laptop lid and then reopen it.

    If I had this problem with Gentoo, I would re-emerge my entire system, which would probably fix it. Since I need to get work done on this thing, I may have to go back Gentoo, but for now I would like to make this work if possible.

    Do you have any suggestions that could help?

    Thanks very much.

    My follow up on the problem: I was unable to discover the reason for the lockups beyond a vague suspicion that it was a mismatch of libraries somehow related to video.

    Ultimately, I decided that I had to move on from Kubuntu because I couldn't get my work done in a reliable fashion. I returned to Gentoo. While it took forever to recompile everything, at the end it all worked, which has a lot going for it. It is too bad, because there is a lot to like about Kubuntu.

    One last thing that is kind of odd, and this might help someone down the road.

    When using the Kubuntu tools to get the recommended version of the Nvidia driver, the version was 550. I also went to the Nvidia site where you can put in your hardware and it tells you what version of the driver to download. It recommended 550.107.02. I checked the driver that Gentoo selected for me. It is 560.35.03. I have no insight as to why that was the better choice, but I gratefully accept it.

    Anyway, the problem is solved, just not in the way that I would have preferred.
