    Okular doesn't work anymore

    Hello,
I am at Kubuntu 22.04. All of a sudden Okular's User interface is corrupt. So I purged and reinstalled it (see below).

    Start-Date: 2022-10-13 11:58:41
    Commandline: apt remove okular
    Requested-By: hs (1000)
    Remove: okular:amd64 (4:21.12.3-0ubuntu1)
    End-Date: 2022-10-13 11:59:07

    Start-Date: 2022-10-13 12:00:07
    Commandline: packagekit role='install-packages'
    Requested-By: hs (1000)
    Install: okular:amd64 (4:21.12.3-0ubuntu1)
    End-Date: 2022-10-13 12:00:15
Most of the menu bar is useless. I wonder what's gone wrong.
    Thanks for any hints.

purging and reinstalling software almost never repairs things, unfortunately.

A better description of what you mean by corrupt, and maybe a screenshot of the menu bar might be helpful.

I assume, being on 22.04, that it has been working fine there previously?
Any recent updates that you might recall?

if you are simply missing the top row menu items (file/edit/view etc) these can be toggled off and on via the ctrl-m keyboard shortcut, or accessed from the 'hamburger' menu to the far right if they have been toggled off.

One thing you can try to maybe reset the right off the bat is to close Okular, and delete or rename your user config file for it: ~/.config/okularrc, as well as okularpartrc or similar, if present.

      Hello,
... purging and reinstalling...: there might have been a new version available (there is not!). Purging should remove the .config/okularrc okularpartrc. I did that anyway, but it didn't help.
Yes, it has worked flawlessly for a couple of months before.
No, I am NOT simply missing the top row menu items. They ARE displayed as follows (in German, with most of the submenu items greyed out. See screenshot below
Screenshot of Okular with corrupt Menubar):
Kein Text (=No Text, should be File) Ansicht (=View) Bearbeiten (=Edit) Gehe zu (=Go to) Lesezeichen (=Bookmarks) Extras Kein Text Kein Text
      Thanks for bothering to help

Purging never deletes local user configs.

So something has happened to Okular's language settings files. I assume this is not happening in other applications' menus? it might be worth a check, even in ones such as Dolphin where they have moved them to the three-bar menu (under "more"), as these UI elements are usually shared across KDE.

I switched my Okular's language to German on my 22.04 vanilla setup, but it not have any issues. I did not change the entire system language, however.

However, just doing so now, I see this:

Click image for larger version Name:	Screenshot_20221014_101030.png Views:	0 Size:	62.0 KB ID:	665911

I am still not seeing any missing text or greyd out items. Still trying to discover what might cause this to happen to KDE menus

Interesting that this bug from 2021 has the exact same menu items missing as yours:
          https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=428453

Also affected krita, in a different fashion

I'd suggest commenting on this one, adding your OS and Okular information, since it clearly is still happening to people.

Or upgrading Okular (and the rest of Kubuntu) via the kubuntu-backports PPA to a version not from 2021, which is what the Okular devs will tell you to do anyway

            Hello,
reading "man apt" I see you are right: apt purge does NOT delete config files in .config of a user's home directory. Thanks for the hint.
I added the kubuntu-backports PPA and did
            sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
            sudo apt-get update
            sudo apt-get upgrade

It helped - kind of! Okular functions correctly with regard to its intended functionality. However, as far as the menus are concerned...
            - submenus are displayed correctly (not shown on the screenshot!) while they were greyed out before;
            - top-level items still show the same behavior ("no text").

By the way -- the luncheon menu shown was very tasty! Here comes a screenshot:
