    clicking on panel icons does not launch apps

    I have been using Kubuntu for many years. Each time I install a new version, I do a fresh install of the OS but keep my home directory as is.

    After installing 22.04, I am experiencing a problem I haven't had before. I have Konsole, Firefox, and Thunderbird icons in the panel. I get these icons in place by clicking on the Kubuntu menu at the bottom left, right clicking the application, and choosing "Add to panel". The icon appears in the panel, but clicking it does not work. "WSLview" briefly appears in task manager when I click, then disappears. Then nothing happens.

    If I want to open Konsole or Firefox, I need to right click on the panel icon and then choose "Open a New Window". With Firefox, this happens with the Snap version as well as the .deb version.

    Since I open at most one instance of Thunderbird, I've worked around the problem by pinning it to task manager instead. Clicking it then works. But since I can have multiple instances of Konsole and Firefox, this technique doesn't work with them (the icon will disappear when the application is opened if the icon is pinned to task manager).

    The problem does not occur with other widgets (clipboard, volume control, etc.).

    I created a brand new user (with brand new configs) to see if this is happening because I retained my home directory across the OS install, but the same problem occurs with that brand new user also.

    How do I overcome this problem? I want the old behavior where I can click the icon on the panel and open up a new instance.

    I am running X:

    $ ps -ef | grep X
    root 1703 1695 5 18:32 tty1 00:00:48 /usr/lib/xorg/Xorg -nolisten tcp -auth /var/run/sddm/{848...9cc} -background none -noreset -displayfd 17 -seat seat0 vt1

    Thanks.

    This may be related to having Windows 10 Linux Subsystem (wslu) installed.

    You might see if uninstalling this fixes things, it seems to perhaps be hijacking file associations
    It might get more attention if anyone having issues related to this click the "this bug effects me" link at the top of the bug report.
