my desktop area (along with wallpaper) has shrunken down to the same size as the default panel .. autohide reveals what's left of the desktop across bottom of screen. it is only responsive to a mouse click in that area .. the rest of the screen is black. however apps and launcher behave normally on the screen. is there a way to restore user desktop area to full 1920x1080 resolution?

OK looks like I fixed this. In system settings.display configuration .. I changed the orientation and applied .. then changed the orientation back to normal and applied. So it looks good right now. Strange problem. -
Now I have discovered that somehow the admin user causes this problem to reappear when restarting the machine. Fixable but annoying. I want to keep the admin user name for this computer which means I don't want to create another user. Why would a user logon affect the desktop size like this?Comment
