[PLASMA 5] Icon packs falling back to hicolor

I have a couple of icons packs which used to work fine on Kubuntu desktop over Ubuntu 20.04. My OS got corrupted somehow and I installed Kubuntu 20.04. I tried using these icons packs which are basically Breeze with some icons changed by me. I think since last 2 weeks some icons are falling back to hicolor icon theme.

It is mainly the Discover icon that uses hicolor, then my custom folder icon uses the Breeze folder (default blue) and in the left-hand side panel, Documents alone switches to Breeze default blue folder instead of monochrome symbolic icons while downloads, home etc continues to use Breeze default ( my icon theme is a modified Breeze, so that is expected ).

Is this is due to some recent update ? Because when I switch themes, it works fine for a day or so before showing this some icons moving to hicolor

Or will be some cache issue ? Any help will be great. Thanks.

I strongly dislike Breeze icons, but other icon themes are poorly implemented in Kubuntu, so I blunder about copying stuff from /usr/local/share/icons to ~/.local/share/icons then editing the "Inherits=" line in the index.theme file to add several themes as fall backs. Actually having all the functions I have in the dolphin toolbar have usable icons helps me every day.

But if I make any changes, deleting the icon cache in ~/.cache is necessary to avoid confusion. Looking now in 20.10 and 20.04 it appears to be called icon-cache.kcache but I'm not sure it's always had that name.

      Thanks.

I was able to find icon-cache.kcache and delete it. But the " Discover " store in KMenu > Favourites is missing. Luckily custom folder icon is available. Not sure how long it will stay as the behaviour was the same before. " System Settings " icon in KMenu is missing.

      Update :

It is the same as before. Some icons are falling back to hicolor.

There is icon-theme.cache in the icon theme folders. Possibly from what I managed to save from the corrupted OS. Shall I delete it ?

These icon themes are not very different. Mainly custom folder icon and 2-3 other icons.

        Update 2:

I tried using breeze as fallback icon theme in index.theme. No luck. Most of the time, icon themes stop working and falls back to whatever icon theme is set as Inherits

        Update 3 :

I think I can word it better now. Within 1 hour of activating the custom icon theme in my machine, it reverts to the fallback theme for some icons and breeze for some icons. Since hicolor was looking odd, I changed Inherits to breeze for my custom themes.

You might be better off going to System Settings and selecting Icons under the Appearance Grouping. I've never liked using Discover as a first choice for getting ANYTHING

I am not getting icons from Discover , if that is what you meant. The issue is my custom icon packs do not stay and reverts to fallback for some icons. Mainly Folder icon, Discover icon etc

I am typing icons in KMenu box and switching icon packs from there.

Why? Why not use Settings | System Settings | Appearance | Icons and select your desired icon pack there? That's what I've always done.

Is it not the same as to call something through GUI and typing in KMenu ? I will try using the path you mentioned and check if it is helpful. Thanks.

                Update :

Switched the icon pack as @DoYouKubuntu mentioned. Hopefully, it will stay this time.

Tried this. Discover icon changed to hicolor, System Settings icon is missing.

What else can I do ?

Okay, something's screwed up somewhere. That should've done it. Just as a test, can you create a new user and apply your preferred icon pack to its settings? Let's just see if a brand-spanking-new profile solves the problem.
