I've been a Kubuntu user for more than ten years. I finally got around to doing a fresh install of 20.04 LTS. I like it so far. But, I've never liked the default wallpaper on the desktop. I prefer to use a personal photo. I can load and apply a personal photo fine, but the next time I reboot, the photo is gone and I'm back to the default wallpaper. I don't remember ever having such a problem with previous versions. How can I make the system save my wallpaper?

Like you, I always use my own photos for wallpaper; I am not having the problem you're describing. Perhaps if you tell us, exactly, how you're setting your wallpaper, something will pop out as the problem. Or, if you prefer, I'll be happy to break down the process step-by-step. One thing's for sure: you shouldn't have to live with wallpaper you don't want!

I do what I've always done: Right-click on the desktop, select Configure Desktop, Click on Add Image, navigate to my favorite photo, Click Apply, then OK. It all works fine, and I have my favorite photo as my desktop wallpaper. But, the next time I start up, the default wallpaper is back, and I have to start over. It doesn't save my wallpaper between sessions.

Oh, good, I'm glad the problem is solved, @Saunter!
Now as for linking your drive...I'm going to leave that to someone else. I haven't needed to do that in a long time, as I get a large [single] hard drive, then partition it to have / -- /home -- /data -- [swap] partitions.
Until then, do it the easy way: copy any photos you want to use as wallpaper over to your SSD! Now they're readily available and won't disappear when you reboot.
