This is sort of annoying (ok, really annoying ) but not deadly: When I boot to the latest versions of GRUB, the menu shifts position each time the screen updates. It coincides with screen updating. I see this on Mint 19.04 based, KDEneon 20.04, and just today - Ubuntu server (non-graphical install).
To break it down:
In short, any update to the screen - either the timer or menu selection change - causes the GRUB menu to shift position.
Notably, this began when I installed my XFX Radeon 580 GTS XXX video card. Prior to that I had been using the internal Intel video port of my i7-6700K processor. My old nVidia card died about 4 months ago so I had been using Intel graphics while I chose a new dedicated GPU. Neither the nVidia card nor the onboard Intel GPU caused this.
The monitor resolution is 3840x1600.
I also have a laptop with a 4K screen and this does not occur there, but it's an nVidia/Intel combo there. It seesm this is related to the AMD GPU.
I am curious if anyone else has experienced this or even heard of it.
To break it down:
- I boot my PC.
- GRUB loads and menu appears as expected center screen.
- When GRUB timer updates 1 second later, the GRUB menu shifts to the upper-right corner of the screen.
- When GRUB timer updates 1 second later, the GRUB menu shifts back to center-screen.
- This repeats until the timer runs out or I make a selection.
- Making a menu selection using the arrow keys also causes a position change.
In short, any update to the screen - either the timer or menu selection change - causes the GRUB menu to shift position.
