    [PLASMA 5] Failing monitor

My laptop display is dying. It will be soon inaccessible. I am currently connecting the laptop to TV using HDMI cable and then using it as monitor. But the sad part is that it does not replicate the laptop screen on TV right from the beginning. I have to use the laptop builtin screen do that. Otherwise, even if I connect the TV as a monitor, the display is more or less inoperable and only the wallpaper is visible. It does not show Press F1 for battery failure, Grub options etc. The best start is from the Kubuntu Plymouth display. Can someone help me with

    1. TV work as a replica monitor of laptop screen from the beginning

    2. TV continues to act as a monitor after a restart or shutdown.

    3. Ability to save the TV as monitor so that when the laptop screen is completely inoperable, I can rely on TV for GUI.

    Thanks.

Have you tried setting the TV as your Primary display and disabling the internal monitor in System Settings?

Otherwise, a simple xrandr command should do the trick:

    xrandr --output eDP-1 --off

This would shutoff the laptop display. Of course, you would need to use the correct output name for it. a simple "xrandr" will list the display names and resolutions.

The other, more solid way would be to put a monitor section in /etc/xorg.conf.d/ that leaves the laptop monitor off and selects and sets the TV.

The real problem may be later when the monitor dies for good. I assume it will not actually be dead, but instead will just be unviewable. You should probably look into disconnecting it physically. You might consider replacing the screen. If it an older laptop often replacements can be had on Ebay for less than $100.

Thanks for the reply. I want to use the inbuilt reply as long as available. I have noticed a strange thing when I connect to TV now. If I close the lid of the laptop, the display on TV is also gone.

I want to buy a new laptop soon. But the market have them at inflated rates due to work from home requirements. Hence the delay. I would like to skip investing on the laptop as I am not sure what else is going to stop working.

Is there any method available where I can use TV display from the beginning without actually killing the laptop display ? I am currently banking on KScreen2. But it is very buggy and annoys with popups every 2 minutes.

Use System Setting to make it the Primary display should be enough.

Your "close the lid" actions are also changeable there under Power Management.

Thanks. If we make the TV primary display, will the inbuilt monitor would still work ? As secondary display if I need to change / fix something for a period when TV is not available ?

I will check the Power Management options.

Primary display just makes it the one the panels are on by default, etc. It it's missing, it will revert to the laptop display.
