Dolphin freezing up regularly

Anyone else having problems with Dolphin freezing up? It seems daily Dolphin will stop working. No errors, just freeze until I force it closed. Then it won't work again until I reboot.

Have you tried purging Dolphin and re-installing it?

A clean Linux only machine here. It does go away when I log out and back in I discovered (not something I usually do). I dumped an lsof readout after a reboot. Now I'm waiting for it to happen again. I want to see what else is running thinking it might be a conflict. The strace output I posted above is continuous output (constantly appearing) when the freeze happens. Lately, I've been running a VM in QEMU (Mint Cinnamon) so I can use Puddletag, VLC to check a few videos, Handbrake to convert file from mkv to mp4, and Brave browser. Any of these could be contributing to the problem. I have not figured out a way to get past the dolphin freeze without at least logging out.

I have not tried purging it. Worth noting that this is a Neon upgrade install not a fresh one. It could be something in my settings from the 18.04 version.

Given it's an upgraded system. The 'standard' "test". Have you created a new user and logged in to it to see if the freezing also occurs there?

Part of the problem is I can't replicate the behavior at will. It just happens after a while - sometimes days but sometimes within a half hour of using it. If I made a new user, I'd have to replicate the entire setup, like creating virtual machines and giving the new user ssh access and dozens if not hundreds of other things, and then use that user account for maybe weeks to see if it happens.

I've only noticed this recently - like last couple weeks. During this time I've been simultaneously doing two or more of:

• Going through a large number of video files and re-encoding them with Handbrake.
• Checking the results with VLC.
• Updating the tags with Puddletag by using a VM running in QEMU.
• Accessing these files using NFS because they're on my server.
• Doing "real" work with LibreOffice.
• Browsing the 'net with Brave.
• Filling down time with KMahjongg.

Also, the 5.4 series kernel has been a problem. There were two dot updates that I couldn't use at all because they caused my ethernet port to cycle on and off continually. Lately, I've felt like my computer has been slower at some tasks and the kernel is suspect.

So how to I trouble-shoot in the midst of all that?

My gut says the most likely candidates are:

1. NFS because it impacts Dolphin and maybe it's a round-robin issue because I'm accessing the same server with the VM at the same time.
2. The kernel is just poor and I should drop back to 5.0 and wait for 5.5.

Other possibilities:

• VLC is constantly causing problems and the current release is buggier than it's ever been IME.
• QEMU is relatively new to me and maybe it involves that.
• Dolphin has a bug.

For now, I'm going to soldier on and see if it keeps happening. If it's an odd combo of the above, I probably won't encounter it again. Or a kernel update or NFS patch will make it go away. The fact that no one else has experienced this AFAIK means it's probably the use-case at the heart of the issue.

If it reoccurs when I'm doing nothing but using Dolphin, I'll dig deeper. I was mostly wondering if other users were experiencing the same behavior at this point.

I have Kubuntu 20.04 totally updated and for the previous two days I had frequent freezes, sometimes doing nothing more than playing Ksudoku. I took it to the shop yesterday to see if it was a physical problem (no one around here knows anything about Linux, it seems). But the computer had been working fine until Friday. And Dolphin sometimes took forever to load, and even Stacer had trouble trying to clean caches. My temperature widget marks at the most 40 deg. C (104 F) but is usually at around 26-30 deg. I don't know if it is the same problem that Oshunluvr is having, but it is sudden and unexpected.

My 2cents. I'm on Kubuntu 20.04, 64 bit, kernel 5.8.10. No problems with Dolphin, which I use often. No slowdowns happening. The kernel may be the biggest difference between our systems (also I'm not using Neon). I know this is not helping, but your configuration is significantly more complex than mine.

My Kubuntu 20.04 is fully updated and is having no problems. The kernel is
5.4.0-47-generic #51-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 4 19:50:52 UTC 2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I'm running Nvidia GT650M on my desktop and everything is lightening fast, unless I am copying 100Gb to a 128Gb USB 2.0 pen drive.


I reinstalled qemu/kvm yesterday. I have several Windows apps running under WINE. My Steam apps, Universe Sandbox^2 and some games run nicely. Minecraft runs very nicely in single user mode and if I run the Minecraft 1.16.3 server both my Minecraft client and server run very well with sub 20ms ticks.

Waterfox will crash on occasion, leaving behind a phantom in PS that I have to use the kill comand on in order to restart it.

My Hurricane IPv6 tunnel is running very well. SageMath works flawlessly. Bible Analyzer 5.2 works well. So does Stellarium. OBS records nicely, even running as an AppImage. Thunderbird email is old reliable.

Aurdino Uno Rev 3 is working great, as is its IDE. So does the XOD IDE for Arduino.

Yesterday I connected with a friend about 100 miles away using Teamviewer and it worked very well.

The other day I pulled out my Delorme EarthMate 20 GPS receiver and plugged it into a USB port. gpsd saw it and started reporting location. It works well with FoxtrotGPS and GPSBabel. I recently received a 1ppm dual gps antenna for Arduino, which I plan to test out soon.

CUBEsdr runs my RTL-SDR USB stick very nicely.

My HP P1606dn duplex laser has been chugging along for almost 10 years, just like this Acer V3-771G.

Finally, my BTRFS has been chugging along for about 5 years without nary a hiccup, even after I moved @home back under @, which simplifies snapshots and rollbacks required by my constant experimentation.

So, if the above is any indication, I'd say that Kubuntu is rock sold stable on this machine.

The main thing that occurs to me is - for the first time ever - I upgraded my install instead of doing a new one. It might simply be that I did something in the past that the newer release doesn't like. I's and old-school Linux user that doesn't leave things be when I don't like them so I do a lot of modifications. It would take months of full-time work to figure out which of them is the culprit, I just don't have enough free time to figure it out. I'm going to continue to use this install until I can't. Then I'll start over fresh. I hope it works itself out as these things often do.

The one thing I've consistently done with every Kubuntu LTS release is to back up my important data to external drives, and then do a fresh install, overwriting everything that exists on the drive. I have never done an upgrade from a previous release, except once as an experiment with either 14.04 or 16.04, I can't remember which, which I quickly redid using a fresh install.

I once upgraded biannually from 13.04 all the way to 17.10, before the already old (used) hdd died. I used to do multiple installations every so many months as I was either constantly running the pre-releases, or just experimented a bit too much I only had one computer most of that time. Having multiple systems allowed me to NOT always do a clean install and Just Leave It Alone. No failures, even for things like Kodi (up to date via PPAs), which was a main use for the system.
I don't dual boot, really, though both my systems have a drive with WIndows on them for warranty reasons. I use virt manager in place of dual booting, and playing with the Linux container on my Chromebook makes me want to look at lxc and container-ized OS installs.

Well, I had it freeze again yesterday and it was about the only thing open on the desktop. So I removed all the configs, cache, etc. from my user folder and purged dolphin. Then reinstalled it and reconfigured it from scratch. We'll see if this helps

Similar problem after an upgrade from 18.03. Dolphin either does not open at all, or it opens and then freezes. It goes away for a while after a reboot, but then the whole sorry thing starts again.

I will do a clean install of 20.04 - important files are backed up. Life is too short to try to figure out what the problem is.
