    Installation failed

I had a problem where GRUB 2 decided to pack up so I decided to do a fresh install from 18.04 to 20.04 LTS, using dual boot with Windows 10.

I got near to the end of the install (93% I think) and it then said the installer has crashed, and it booted me up into the live version.

I've no idea why it fails. If I then click the upper left hand corner of the screen where it says to install Kubuntu and go through the process it appears to just hang on the final "install" section where it says "the installation will finish soon. We hope you enjoy Kubuntu!"

    Any ideas?!

In the partition set up I went manual and kept all of the partitions the same, the only one I formatted was my old root partition and kept my old home as /home.

    Thanks in advance

You made sure you were pointing grub to the correct install location?
That may not be sda these days if you are efi
My efi partition is sda1 so I point grub there, YMMV
Another thing. Have you let the media check run as the live system starts, you actually have to manually exit the check, but it's worth letting the check run

Ooh you might be onto something... When I chose GRUB location I chose sda4 =which is where I'm mounting "/" as I assumed it'd install it fresh there?

I'll leave it as the default option and see what happens. I'll report back within an hour or so.

Thanks for your help so far, it is much appreciated.

Default seems to be sda for me all the time
But for me that's not right so I have to change it because I am efi and that partition is sda1 for me

Thanks. I think I have a couple of efi partitions...?!

Yes, I have 2 hard drives. One of which holds my Windows system and has an efi partition. My other hard drive has a windows (ntfs) data partition as well as my old Linux system which also has an efi partition.

Not sure which to choose, and then do I choose the specific partition (eg sda3) or the device (eg sda)?

            Thanks!

OK so I reported the bug and turns out it'd already been reported, and it was saying it was due to trying to install the 3rd party during the install process.

So I tried again from scratch but didn't tick that box and the installation was successful.

Now, the issue I have is that I still have a GRUB problem. It just says minimal bash-like line editing is supported... "

              Any thoughts?

              Thanks very much!

                Right...

I have managed to get in but it is not perfect. If I reboot my laptop and just leave it be, I get that GRUB error. If I press F12 and choose "boot options" and then choose "Ubuntu" I get the normal GRUB screen and I can load up Ubuntu or windows.

Whilst not the end of the world it is not ideal. Can someone help? For reference, I currently have secure boot switched off.

edit - I have managed to solve it using the following website:

                https://itsfoss.com/fix-minimal-bash...b-error-linux/

Although despite Ubuntu having priority over Windows booting, it still booted straight into Windows. So I went back into the UEFI settings and disabled Windows boot so it forced it to Ubuntu, so now, GRUB loads as it should and I can choose between Ubuntu and Windows, both of which boot as they should.

Thanks very much for your help!

That's insane. 3rd party has not affected the installs previously. Off with his head!

This is only the second time I have installed Kubuntu, and the last time I didn't have any problems. For years prior to this I was using OpenSUSE, so you will have to forgive my ignorance

Sorry, "his" referring to whomever it was who let a silly error be introduced to the install code

Well depends which disk is the boot disk. You basically the same as me, in that you have a nvme and a standard sata ssd
Foe me my sata ssd is the boot device so my efi is there
If your system is working now? You should be happy.
But whichever device is the boot device, then grub will have or should have been put in the efi partition of that device
