So a few days ago I decided to try the 20.04 version of Kubuntu.
Q-Is there a more suitable place to point out errors. Or is the forum good enough?
I didn't want to dual boot, so I went for a minimal install on a virtual Machine.
After selecting "minimal" install and DEselecting updates and third party drivers, I let it be. After a reboot I was shocked at the following
1. LibreOffice was install Despite the instructions to the contrary, and worse of all, it wanted 200-300 Megs of frigging updates.
This was "needing Updating" from Discover. I had to manually unselect multiple things, then decided to just command remove and purge LibreOffice, which resulted in the Kubuntu crashing and I had to repeat the install.
2. When I opened Firefox, some system tray icon popped up asking me to install some plasma addon to Firefox. Seriously. Why?
3. What is "Colorcorrect geolocation Updater" ? Why is it running? (Ny anti-NSA paranoia is kicking in)
4. Battery settings still present.
It's a desktop. I still haven't found out where to disable and uninstal this feature.
On the plus side.
The system settings is a little better in layout. Still annoying that some items when selected, bounce you to a new menu screen, and you have to go and select <back>.
From point 2 above. I have managed to find that some background service is running to prompt people to install this addon. (Why is it the NSA is telling ubuntu what to run?) From reading about this addon, it is meant to easily share stuff. That is about as user friendly and private as Firefox sync. If I wanted other companies, the Government to know what I do online, which porn sites I visit, what undesirable searches I perform, then they can get a friggin warrant.
I still firmly believe that stuff like this, needs to be pointed out to the user, as in "We have this new feature, blah blah, privacy statement" do you want it installed "<Yes or No>". If you select no, it is removed. If nothing is selected, it is disabled until you agree to it.
ALSO
If you do select a minimal install, and Kubuntu wants all this stuff added, like LibreOffice, Spyware, Bloatware, Other things, how about a "Complete your install... Do you want to add the following items" And again explain what it is, how big it is, what it means to the user, computer.
For computer literate people, this is good
For people that struggle to find the 'ON' button, and haven't a clue to password, then asking this is good. It should explain what it is, why it's being installed. Everyone I have convinced that Linux is better than Windows, keeps asking me what all these things are. I have a minimal hardware laptop, and last time I tried a minimal Kubuntu install, it clogged up the Hard Drive, and slowed down the CPU so much, that I got very frustrated, I went and found an actually 50meg install. At least it worked. Did what it was told, and was an actually minimal install.
I think I've vented enough for now.
