    Well nuts.

did you uninstall ippusbxd, as I suggested? I'd suggest also unplugging the printer and removing any detected printers in System Settings before plugging it back in after removing the program.
It seems I did not. My error. Will give it a shot.

    Again...thanks.

      Status report:

TRYING TO MAKE THIS A NETWORK PRINTER, via claydoh's instructions
      1. ippusbxd is not installed
      2. printer is turned on
      3. wireless light is on but flashing
      4. USB cable is not plugged
      5. (at this point printer prints 2 blank pages!)
      6. WPS button pressed on router
      7. After a minute or so wireless light is still flashing
      8. Attempt to print test page yields "unable to locate printer" message in print queue window.

TRYING TO MAKE THIS A NETWORK PRINTER, via instructions on p. 21 of downloaded printer User Manual
      1-4. Same as above
      5. Per manual instructions, wireless button is held down 3 seconds, then WPS button is pressed.
      6. Wireless button stops flashing and displays constant blue color for the first time
      7. Attempt to print test page, as before, yields message "file not found" in print queue window.

Having contacted HP's launchpad page for hplip, I have received this suggestion:

"You are better off putting the device on the network.

      https://wiki.debian.org/CUPSQuickPrintQueues"

I am digesting what's on that page...

IMO that's progress. After this, within a minute or so, a new printer should pop into existence on the system settings->printer screen, as it is found by some system service, assuming your Kubuntu is on the same subnet.

The old "printer" as known by Kubuntu will still be there and still be the default printer; did you remove it?

I quit. Four days total, and today another 3 hours of fruitless effort - with multiple blank pages "printed". The printer will be returned for a different brand - probably Canon.

When installing one's printer takes 9 times the effort of installing one's OS something's badly wrong. Driverless printer? How about no quality control for the installation process development?

My sincere thanks to all of you for your support and ideas. You exceeded my already high expectations. In the final effort, HP's support folks were involved, but at this point, I have no more time to give this shipwreck. I need something that just works.

After seemingly endless loops of deletions, retries, reading new documentation, posting new problem reports, I'm done. I quit.

Five different people have been involved in this effort, counting someone on HP's Launchpad hplip page. My thanks to you, truly. We tried, and now I want to try something else.

Canon printers used to be terrible to install on Linux.
But, it appears things have changed. A website describing their new (to me) Linux driver is here.
However, Canon printers still have their problems.
From a marketing point of view Canon uses (still?) ink cartridges that still have 25% ink in them when their software reports that the cartridges are empty. Canon uses special codes to detect that the cartridge you insert is not an off-brand replacement (read cheaper). If you get a Canon Laser printer Canon is notorious for including a toner cartridge that prints only a few hundred pages.

After further thought, it's clear to me now that this printer is not functioning correctly. There is at least one page of information it can be asked to print out merely by pressing and holding two buttons on the front panel. Doing this yields yet another blank page. That cannot be a connection of installation error.

So...I've chased a ghost it seems. The printer will be returned, and for one not so arduous to install regardless of whether or not it is functioning correctly.

Thanks again to all of you for the help offered!

how to sucessfully install the HP Deskjet 2722:
                          1. install virtualbox and VirtualBox Extension Pack -
                          2. open virtualbox. enable the printer in the main UI
                          3. download the Windows 10 ISO
                          4. install win 10 on virtuialbox - you don't have to buy a registration key. it should pick up printer during setup
                          5. set up shared directory between win VM / Linux
                          6. put any docs you want to print there
                          7. open the directory from windows
                          8. print
i had already set up a win VM because i have a win-only PC oscilloscope

Wow, alizardx, using an elephant gun to kill a mouse is overkill, especially if the gun blows up in your face.

There are plenty of PC oscilloscope software that runs on Linux, here is a free download of one
                            https://www.picotech.com/downloads/linux
or, a free download of a simple one.
                            http://xoscope.sourceforge.net/

But, installing Win11 in a VM to get a printer working? Insanity.

                              1. hplip ver. 3.21.4 has been installed.
                              2. HP 2722 printer is turned on. Power light is solid white. Wireless light is blinking. (In days of working on this printer installation problem it has only ever been blinking...) This says there is no wireless connection. Previously, printer was set up to be wireless but it did not appear to work. I kept getting "Printer cannot be located" messages, and the wireless light never stopped blinking.
                              3. I plug in the USB printer cable and try to print a test page, from http://localhost:631/printers/HP_DeskJet_2700_series - yet again I get a blank page.

This printer appears to be printing something...then spits out a blank page.
                              4. http://localhost:631/printers/HP_DeskJet_2700_series tells me that the print job is completed.

I am contacting HP at https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+addquestion

                              Any further suggestions
As far as the wireless printer is concerned I would install hplip-gui and install it through that. Also you should set the printer to a fixed IP address outside the normal DHCP range
My printer is set to something above 200 so on my network it looks like this 192.168.0.210. That way the printer does not get a new IP address every time something new is added to the network.

I've had to do that at work, albeit Win 10, to get through the weird VPN and PIN set up to get to the printer. It was obscure enough to be a mission on Windows; some colleagues running Windows have given up trying to get it to work. I can get Ubuntu to see the printer, but not to send the PIN.
