I have a Kubuntu 20.04 system (originally 18.04) that overall am very happy with. However, I have a nagging intermittent issues that I am not sure how to properly troubleshoot and diagnose. Occasionally, when playing games (specifically CIV5 and City Skylines) I encounter a crash that I suspect is hardware related. The entire screen will freeze (except for the mouse) and I am unable to interact with anything. Audio continues to play normally for a while until eventually that begins to stammer and the GPU fans kick into high gear. The only way I have found to get back to a usable machine is to hard power off my tower by holding down the power button.
This crash can happen early on or after hours of play. Sometimes I can go for weeks without it happening, sometimes it happens multiple times in a day. It's been driving me nuts and I don't know whats the best way to diagnose the issue that I'm having and how to go about correcting it. This install has also had all the hardware except for the GPU changed out overtime, however this issue did occur before making a motherboard/cpu and ram change.
Any guidance on how to diagnose an issue like this would be appreciated.
