    [SOLVED] anybody remember sigrot?

it is a tiny little utility that rotates quotes in and out of a .signature file.

there are man pages for it here -- https://www.gsp.com/cgi-bin/man.cgi?...1&topic=SIGROT -- and here -- https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?...EASE+and+Ports

i had it on bionic, and it worked great... i even had a package that contained it, so that i could install it elsewhere, as well...

but then my cloud drive got cracked and deleted, and the package that i had got deleted with everything else.

and the place i got the package to begin with, here -- https://www.linuxquestions.org/linux...buntu_debian_0 -- has a link that doesn't work any longer.

i found a link to sigrot v.1.0 here -- http://ftp-archive.freebsd.org/mirro...sigrot-1.0.tgz -- but i can't get it to work, and i'm fairly sure that there's a more recent version.

there appears to be a version 1.2 for AIX, here -- http://bio.gsi.de/DOCS/AIX/aixpdslib...es/sigrot.html -- but i don't know if AIX and kubuntu are sympatico... and the links appear to be dead, anyway...

does anyone have a link to a semi-current version of sigrot?

or, conversely, does anyone know of a utility that does the same thing as sigrot?

there appears to be a "port" of sigrot, here -- https://cgit.freebsd.org/ports/tree/mail/sigrot -- which isn't actually sigrot, and appears to make sigrot v.1.0... but it's a start... if it actually works... unfortunately, i am clueless about such things. does anybody know if it might work?

okay, here's a new thing... i actually found a .deb file for the latest version of sigrot, which is v.1.1-2... which isn't that recent (circa 2000's), but it still works, so if anyone else is interested, contact me and i'll send it to you!

That kind of reminds me of motd (message of the day), which I used to have running on the very first system I administered. As its name indicates, each day it displayed some kind of message, usually some sort of pithy saying, often making users chuckle. I hadn't thought about that in eons...

MOTD was system wide, and everybody got the message when logging in.

.signature is more or less the same thing, only on an individual user level, and sigrot changes the .signature file according to rules set up by crontab.
