Adept will not work any more

I'm looking at a friend's laptop. She had a problem with Firefox, so she was removing it using Adept and was planning to reinstall it. During the removal of Firefox, Adept failed. When the Adept Package Manager is brought up now, it gives the following error message:

Something broke. Adept will exit when you click OK. Please recover manually.

The exception says:

Success. Context:
The list of sources could not be read.

I took a quick look at /etc/apt and the files and directory look like they are intact, but I'm far from knowledgeable about adept and these files could be corrupted - I don't know.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would get a terminal going and issue:

sudo dpkg --audit

and see what happened.

Thank you for the suggestion. I tried running 'sudo dpkg --audit' and it gave no output, returning only the shell prompt.

do you get errors? what are thay?

the usual explanation for your original error "The list of sources could not be read." would be a leftover lock file or an other package manager open .

my guess ........a leftover lock file

do

ls -la /etc/apt

to see

Thanks for your suggestions. I tried running 'sudo apt-get update' and the error message told me that it did not like line 2 in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mozillateam-firefox-stable-karmic.list.

I deleted line 2, which was simple an 'n', and tried running again and got output shown at the end of this post.

At this point, I think it will be easier upgrading the laptop from kubuntu 9.1 to 11.1. Her laptop is due for an upgrade anyway.

Aaa yes my bad ...........Karmic is not supported any more.

Hardy is the oldest still in the repo and will be dropped next.

Hang on... those are DNS name resolution errors. Jim, is your friend's laptop able to do anything else on the Internet?
