    Do I need kubuntu-restricted-extras?

I'm using Kubuntu 9.10 and I tried to install kubuntu-restricted-extras but KPackageKit won't install it. Just about every kind of media file plays on my computer and I can watch YouTube videos and listen to BBC iPlayer stuff so do I really need kubuntu-restricted-extras? Thanks for any help.

    Commonly used restricted packages

This package depends on some commonly used packages in the Kubuntu multiverse repository.

Installing this package will pull in support for MP3 playback and decoding, Java runtime environment, Flash plugin, DVD playback, and LAME (to create compressed audio files).

Please note that this does not install libdvdcss2, and will not let you play encrypted DVDs. For more information, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Re...ts/PlayingDVDs

Please also note that packages from multiverse are restricted by copyright or legal issues in some countries. See http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/licensing for more information.

You could install those packages one by one. If you want or need them.

The KPackageKit is a developing application. Many users are using the Synaptic package manager. The KPackageKit and Synaptic are frontends to the apt. More of the package managers > FAQ: Package Managers.

The Karmic kubuntu-restricted-extras is trying to install the Sun Java.

The Sun Java needs the agreement of the Sun Java licence.

The tabulator key is used to select/enable the OK/Yes/No options.

I would use the command line:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras
    or the Synaptic.

      Re: Do I need kubuntu-restricted-extras?

I'm really getting confused now. I installed Synaptic and it shows kubuntu-restricted-extras - 36 (i386) as being installed but when I look at kubuntu-restricted-extras - 36 (i386) in KPakageKit is shows kubuntu-restricted-extras - 36 (i386) as not being installed.

One of the things kubuntu-restricted-extras - 36 (i386) installs is pulseaudio so I looked in KPackageKit to see if pulseaudio is installed and KPakageKit shows it is.

I've abandoned all hope of ever understanding how Linux works.

Rog is being 'polite' regarding KPackageKit. I simply say that it sucks. Now that you have Synaptic installed, use it and stop using KPackageKit.

Thanks for the tip. I agree KPackageKit sucks. Before I installed Synaptic I had to use the terminal to install some of the software I need because KPackage couldn't resolve the dependencies.

Now I'm wondering why pulse audio causes a bug or something in Ubuntu with Abiword and I couldn't use Abiword in Ubuntu until I uninstalled pulseaudio but in Kubuntu it seems I can have pulesaudio and it doesn't cause any problems with Abiword. Strange!
