distorted icons on panel and desktop

After upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10, I occasionally (though increasingly frequently), experience the problem of distorted icons on the panel and desktop. All other icons, menus and graphics (at least that I am aware of) appear fine and functional. I tried upgrading to KDE 4.4.2, but this did not remedy the issue.

Once the distortion occurs, it is not resolved by rebooting. Interestingly though, it is temporarily remedied by uninstalling something from the package manager - therefore I simply install then immediately uninstall a package for a temporary fix.

Any suggestions?

Usually from 9.04 to 9.10 also upgrades the kde version and thus plasma.

Soemtimes your new kde doesn't like the old plasma set up.

Take a good look at this sectio:

kquitapp plasma-desktop

The applications that are not using the plasma-desktop are still working: Krunner (Alt+F2), Dolphin, Konqueror, Konsole, ...

2) Rename the plasma config files:

~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc
~/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc
~/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktoprc
~/.kde/share/config/plasmarc

3) Restart the plasma:

plasma-desktop

This should reset the plasma-desktop to the default.

Okay, what this means.

With:

kquitapp plasma-desktop

you will stop plasma.

Now open up dolphin with alt+f2->dolphin

Navigate to your /home/.kde/share/config folder and rename the files mentioned above.

Remember that .kde is a hidden file, so you will have to activate hidden files in dolphin->view.

Now Restart the plasma:

plasma-desktop

Sometimes the KDE icon cache could get corrupted. If this is the problem then this could help > Topic: Corrupt Desktop Icons

Reseting the plasma desktop, as suggested by Fintan, didn't fix the problem but deleting the icon cache, as Rog131 suggested, seems to have worked. Well, at least for now. Thanks guys
