    mmm... I am running Kubuntu Lucid Lynx. You are running Karmic.

    Lucid Lynx is sporting KDE 4.4.2. What is Karmic using.

      KDE 4.4.2 here (Karmic). If I install the Application Launcher Menu, what you show is there.
      Windows no longer obstructs my view.

        I think you'll find out what you need to comment out if you look at /etc/xdg/menus/kde4-applications.menu

          Don't think so.

          grep avorites /etc/xdg/menus/kde4-applications.menu finds no match. I tried using Favorites and favorites as well, so opted to just use 'part' of the name - avorites - and still no match is found.
          Windows no longer obstructs my view.

            Oh, I thought you wanted to remove the "Favorites" and "Recent" menu items from the kickoff menu.

            If you want to edit the contents of the "Favorites" menu then edit
            ~/.kde/share/config/kickoffrc
