    KDE, reinstalling after crash. [SOLVED]

    hi,

my KDE crashed today and i tried to fix it by updating it, unfortunately it did not work.. its still not working and i wonder if there is a way i can reinstall it using terminal that would allow me to stay clear of TTY1 mode?

in short, how can i reinstall KDE from scratch..

    You likely don't need to.

Please tell us how far you get when booting. Are you able to log in (KDM)? Do you get a desktop, or end up at a terminal prompt?

i get into "KDE", but i get an error saying plasma has crashed...so i cannot view allot of stuff, plus my keyboard works on and of at its own will..but i got terminal...because i opened system settings before it crashed i get that every time i boot up..and since i cannot close windows using the X at the left top side i have not closed it...so i got its functions including terminal.

        Re: KDE, reinstalling after crash.

i think i know what it is, there seem to be about 31 updates i am not able to download, they are listed as forbidden...and they are KDE related...

i read that you can use ubuntu tweak to force them to download, but i am unable to install ubuntu tweak .deb files even with konsole...so i dont know what to do...

i really want to avoid it, but could updating to 10.4 be my quickest solution?

I assume they are shown as forbidden by kpackagekit?

Try opening a terminal window and using the command

            Code:
            sudo dpkg --configure -a
            Return
            Enter password then return

That will clear any half-finished upgrade then

            Code:
            sudo apt-get update
            Return

            This refreshes the package list

            Code:
            sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
            Return

This identifies packages for which updates are available. Select y and hit return to download and install.

On the question of 2 desktops - are you able to say how this is manifested? If you are saying you have got a new panel laid over the original then simply right click and unlock widgets. Then right click on the panel and select to remove it to reveal the original.

If you are seeing 2 desktops (i.e icon sets) that suggests to me you are probably showing 2 folder views at the same time. With widgets unlocked, right click in the general area occupied by the icons and select "remove this folder view". That should then reduce you to one, after which right click and lock widgets.
