    System has become SLOW

I installed kubuntu 9.10 and the system thismorning seemed to run fine this afternoon. Tonight its taking 2 - 5 minutes for the system to do anything. It has allowed me to occasionally access the simple system programs but mostly my fan runs and I wait. CPU usage is at about 5% and memory is at about 40% capacity. I am sadly writing to you under windows on my laptop. I would like to get away from ms but as you can see... it works. Fan still running fast, just slowed down at 7 min. net top system Intel 33atom processor with ion on board, 1 GB ram. HELP I don't want to load xp.

    System has become SLOW

First, thanks for using the forum search!

There are two things we will need to know about your system, to have any chance of helping:

    1. Hardware -- make and model, if it is a "store-bought" computer, or motherboard and CPU models if you built it. Also:

    Code:
    lspci -vv
    and post the output.

    2. Software -- you posted under Ver. 9.04 -- is that it? You can find out, in a Konsole window, with

    Code:
    uname -a
and then, for a slow-running issue, another useful thing to see is the output of

    Code:
    top
Since video drivers can be a cause of slow performance, please tell which driver you are using.

And, if you have Desktop Effects turned on, please turn it off and test again.

      @dbuettner -

I split out and moved your post (and dibl's response) because your issue isn't germane to the topic in which you 'replied.' The topic you replied in was specific to a problem with Google Earth. Your issue concerns a general slow down of your system. What you did is considered to be hijacking of a post/thread and seen as impolite.

Thanks for getting back to me.

My system is foxconn nt-330i bare bones with 1gb ram installed and a 120gb hdd. The sys was booted from a sd card yesterday at 11am. The system seemed to perform fine (my first time on a Linux system) Couldn't connect to a wireless network so I took it to a friends and sitting next to his box (Apple airport) I was able to connect. went to the movies, came home Its now slow. i'm fairly certain the bad reception is a hardware issue and the performance may be due to driver issues. However at this time getting on line and downloading drivers could take days to complete if at all.

Presenting Symptoms, The comp will allow me to type and use the mouse. However it takes some time to respond and seems to be so busy that new commands are ignored.

I could reinstall my os? I have nothing on the system.

        Thanks for looking

The video drivers are ION from Invidia and no effects are running. I mostly emptied the desktop to less than startup.

OK, that's an interesting tidbit. What do you mean "booted from"? Is Kubuntu installed on that 120GB hard drive, or on a SD card?

yes that is an interesting tidbit!!

I'd like to know the size of the SD card if that's what your runing Kubuntu on.

and see the output of " df -h " and " free " after it was runing for a bit.

I have a 2 Gig USB stick that has 9.10 +Kubuntu-restricted-extras + a few hundred Mib's swap and it's FULL ...........if you let it temp up to mutch stuff it will bog down.

I use it to burn off data on windows boxes that have ben let go to long.........LOL
                    befor redoing them.

but to do even that it is nesesarey to make a /tmp folder on the HD and point K3b to it or you cant even burn a CD (not enuff room on the USB )

                      Re: System has become SLOW

I would expect really slow performance running any OS on a SD card -- equal or worse than on a USB stick. The only way it would work reasonably well is if you can use a "toram" option to load it into RAM, similar to something like the Parted Magic Live CD.

                        Hey,

I used a 4gb sd card to boot and install to the hard drive. I have my system working much faster now and with I could tell you why. It seems to be my browser was running in the background unable to connect to the internet. The available utilities to monitor resources didst indicate the system was burdened and showed 60+5 memory use and 20 to 50% cpu.

Any way, I am still not connected to the internet and I feel like a two year old trying to drive a car. This is my second day with linux

                            Re: System has become SLOW

Now we need to know about your PC - Make/model.
And we need to know about the Network/Ethernet controller it is using. For that, open a console (Alt+F2 and type konsole) and then type:
                            Code:
                            lspci | grep Ethernet
We need to know what is shown.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

                              Thanks,

My pc is a compact laptop about a year old with vista. However I was almost able to reply on the kubuntu system. I did in fact get it to connect to the internet. The atheros ar5b95 wifi card is b/g/n capable but only recognizing g signals. I know i need to install drivers and have the oem disk. I have the drivers installed on the 4gb sd car but dont have a clue how to down load the files in kubuntu.

Thanks for hanging with me. Next year maybe Ill know where the start button is.
