[SOLVED]how to play music from A on B/STREAMING MUSIC OVER A NETWORK

First off, forgive me if this question has been addressed but I searched and I can't find anything that helps. Sufficiently said, I know nothing about setting up local file networks.

Please let me know if I can be any more specific. I have 2 linux machines, A is running Kubuntu 9.10 and B is running Crunchbang Lite 9.04.01. Basically, I use the windows partition of B as a music studio so it's hooked up to my main stereo system. But A is my office/personal machine so it has all of my music files that I'd like to play through my main stereo system.

Until now, I've been using local ftp to transfer music files from A to B but I know there has to be a way I can stream these files in real-time over a local network. Please give me some ideas from which to jump off! I don't know what software is required to perform this task.

Also, I'm running Crunchbang Lite on B because it's a relatively old machine and Crunchbang Lite is just less heavy than Kubuntu. If there is a basic incompatibility regarding networking between the two OS, let me know.

    Thanks in advance!

Re: how to play music from A on B?

    Just so we're clear -

Computer B plays the music and computer A has the music on it you'd like to play?

You have a couple of options but I think the best for you would be samba because it works with windows and linux.

As a minimum; Set up computer B as a samba server and computer A as a samba client. If you set up computer A as a samba server as well, then when you boot computer B to windows, you'll still be able to access your files on computer A.

There are lots of posts on how to do this - start by installing kdenetwork-filesharing on your kubuntu box. That will put a samba configuration tool into your System Settings -> Advanced section

Hm, I am grappling with that situation as well. What I don't seem to be able to do is stream via samba :P I suppose you can work around it with vlc, but that is cumbersome.

I'll be following this thread with interest

NFS is an easy way to network Linux computers. I have used it to have one computer play music that is stored on another. Very simple how-to is here.

That looks like a very straightforward tutorial arist. Thanks! I'll report back when the weekend comes.

toad: you try it too and we'll compare notes

I guess I don't know what you mean by "stream". I have four linux computers and three windows and one mac. My server is linux, and all my other computers play videos, music, view photos and share documents. I use NFS for my linux boxes and samba for the others.

I think I'll stick with NFS because I don't need to interact with the windows partition. Mainly, I don't know the first thing about configuring the NFS server so I'm going to follow the directions in arist's post.

Well, I was going to follow so as not to hijack, but I suppose I've got to answer a straight forward question

By stream I mean avoiding the following behaviour:

An AppleMac opens a samba share with music, clicks on a file to play it and the whole thing gets actually copied over while playing rather than just streaming it.

Ah! Well then "stream" is the default behavior for linux.

Yes - I think NFS is more stable and simpler to set up than samba, maybe faster too.

Post back if you need any help.

toad: feel free to hijack this thread. Might this problem be with the AppleMac, though?

I can't stand iTunes! I can never tell what it wants. Even Rhythmbox for GNOME is a bit too much like it.

In regard to my initial problem, the NFS server seems to be the solution for streaming! Thanks for that link; it made setup really easy. toad: in accordance with your signature, I'm going to mark this thread as [SOLVED]. I'm not sure anyone knew you had hijacked it.
